Former East Bengal boss Trevor Morgan applies for Indian football team head coach role: Reports
Trevor James Morgan, a famous name among East Bengal fans who started following the sport in the last decade and perhaps the most successful East Bengal head coach in recent times, has reportedly applied for the head coach role of the Indian football team. The All India Football Federation had put out a job posting, stating the requirement for a head coach for the senior team and the U-23 team.
Trevor Morgan, who knows Indian football like the back of his palm, recently revealed to Asianet News Bangla in an interview that he is interested in the role.
"I am interested in the Indian national team head coach role and have applied for the same," he said on Asianet News Bangla.
Notably, a few of the current Indian football team players like Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Nikhil Poojary and even Rahul Bheke to some extent have worked with the former East Bengal boss. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, in fact, at the budding stages of his exceptional career, plied his trade at East Bengal. And it was under the tutelage of Trevor Morgan that he emerged as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Red & Gold Brigade.
Nikhil Poojary, on the other hand, was a part of East Bengal during Trevor Morgan's second stint when he was brought back to the helm in 2016. Morgan preferred to deploy Poojary in the winger's role depsite having formidable names like Jackichand Singh and Romeo Fernandes in the side.
Trevor James Morgan's journey in India
Trevor Morgan was introduced to Indian football by East Bengal in 2010. The club was going through a rough patch and roped in the English manager to rejuvenate the camp.
Morgan meanwhile, became an instant hit and a fan favorite. Such was his craze that during his last official game in the 2012-13 season, which was a Kolkata derby that East Bengal won 3-2, fans in the gallery cheered their hearts out by chanting his name. While he was leaving the stadium, there were clippings which showed East Bengal fans touching his feet, requesting him to change his decision and stay at the club.
However, as the Indian Super League started, the Englishman joined Kerala Blasters as the assistant to David James. He even worked a short stint as the head coach of Dempo in the I-League, before returning to East Bengal in 2016.
Since 2022, Trevor Morgan has been managing the Australian U-20 side.
