Mohun Bagan Super Giant sign Spanish defender Alberto Rodriguez

Mohun Bagan Super Giant have announced the acquisition of Spanish defender Alberto Rodriguez from Indonesian club Persib Bandung. Rodriguez becomes Bagan’s third signing of the summer, joining Apuia Ralte and Tom Aldred.

The 31-year-old brings a wealth of experience, having played for various clubs across Europe and Indonesia. He is expected to be a pivotal part of Bagan’s defense as they prepare for a demanding season ahead.

In an interview with the club’s media after signing the deal, Rodriguez expressed his delight in joining the Mariners, stating that his ambitions align with those of the club.

"I have been following the Indian Super League for the last few years. I have also witnessed how Mohun Bagan claimed the ISL Shield in dominating fashion. But the main reason for me signing for Bagan is their fanbase," Rodriguez said (via MBSG Media)
"Usually when I am playing in front of a jampacked crowd, it helps me in giving my best and in India, in this regard, there is no other club parallel to Mohun Bagan. Mohun Bagan fans are the best when it comes to support and emotions. My main aim to defend the ISL Shield and win all the tournaments the club will participate in. Joy Mohun Bagan!" he added.

New head coach Jose Molina praised Rodriguez, emphasizing that his experience will be a vital asset for the squad, given Bagan’s high ambitions.

"Alberto is a defender, who with his strength and aggressiveness can lead the backline. Apart from being a good defender, another quality he holds is to contribute to the offensive third’s creativity. Moreover, he is comfortable in both feet. He played a crucial role in helping his side become champions of Indonesia (top-tier league). I am happy that he has now decided to play for the best team," Molina said.

An overview of Alberto Rodriguez's career

Rodriguez, born in Las Palmas, Spain, began his senior career with the lower-division Spanish club Aruca, where he played for five seasons. He then moved to the Spanish third-tier club Villarrubia for one season before returning to the fifth-division club Tamareceite, where he made over 100 appearances across four seasons.

Following a successful spell with the Segunda División side Lugo in 2021, where he played over 50 games in two seasons, Rodriguez moved to Asia last season, becoming a key player for Indonesian club Persib Bandung and helping them secure the league title in his first season.

As a center-back, Rodriguez is versatile, capable of playing both left and right-sided center-back positions, thanks to his comfort with both feet. He is dominant in the air, quick across the ground, and a strong reader of the game, qualities that will benefit Bagan.

Additionally, Rodriguez is excellent in possession, with the ability to carry the ball into midfield particularly noteworthy. Overall, he is undoubtedly a shrewd signing for Bagan, who will rely on his experience to achieve their ambitions this season.
