Mumbai City FC announce the arrival of former FC Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder Jon Toral
Mumbai City FC have announced the arrival of Spanish attacking midfielder Jon Toral, marking their sixth signing of the summer. Toral, who has signed a two-year deal with the Islanders, joins on a free transfer from Greek club OFI Crete FC.
This is undoubtedly a significant signing both for the league and for Mumbai City, as Toral brings extensive experience from playing for some of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Speaking to the Mumbai City FC media after signing his contract, Jon Toral expressed his delight in joining the club and stated that Mumbai’s trophy-winning mentality attracted him.
"I am incredibly excited to begin this new chapter of my life in India. Mumbai City has a strong track record of winning trophies and is one of the most successful clubs in the country," Toral said.
"The club’s commitment to their philosophy and values is of the highest order, making it an easy decision for me to join. I can’t wait to meet my teammates, Coach Petr Kratky, and the passionate fans who make Mumbai City FC a special club," he added.
Head coach Petr Kratky also commented, noting that Toral’s ability on the ball will be a valuable addition to the squad.
"We’re happy to have Jon join us at Mumbai City FC. He is a very experienced player with the technical abilities and skills that will bolster our midfield for the upcoming seasons. Jon is a great player and a leader on and off the pitch, and we believe his presence will help the squad achieve the desired objectives. I look forward to having him in our squad for the coming seasons," Kratky said (via MCFC Media).
Jon Toral arrives at Mumbai City FC with significant experience in Europe
Born in Catalonia, the 29-year-old midfielder joined the renowned La Masia academy at just eight years old. He later caught the eye of Arsene Wenger, who brought him to Arsenal alongside Hector Bellerin in 2011.
While his Arsenal career did not unfold as he had hoped, several loan spells at Championship clubs Brentford and Birmingham City, and stints at Granada and Rangers, were notable. He also spent three years at Hull City FC in the Championship before moving to OFI Crete in the 2021-22 season.
Overall, he has made 78 appearances for OFI over three seasons, scoring 15 goals and providing seven assists in the Greek first division. He arrives in good form, having made 29 appearances last season, with four goals and four assists.
Jon Toral has primarily played as a number 10, but can also operate on either flank or as a second striker. His creativity and technical ability are standout qualities that will benefit the Islanders.
There will be competition for places, given the arrivals of Brandon Fernandes and Jeremy Manzorro, but Jon Toral is undoubtedly a quality signing for the club after losing Apuia.
