Sunil Chhetri explains his close connection with Virat Kohli - "When we chat, we understand that the other person understands it"

Sunil Chhetri, who recently announced his retirement from international football, has shared insights into his conversation with Virat Kohli, noting their strong mutual understanding.

Chhetri took to social media on Thursday, May 16, to announce his decision to retire and delivered a heartfelt message to his supporters. Kohli, who shares a close bond with the footballer, was among the first to respond to the post, commenting, “My brother. Proud.”

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) legend also discussed how Chhetri messaged him before announcing his retirement during an RCB Insider Show, further highlighting the strong bond they share. He stated:

"He’s actually a really dear friend. He messaged me as well, informing me that he’s going to do it. But I’d say that he felt like he’s at peace with the decision. I’ve become really close with over the years and wish him nothing but the best. He’s a lovely guy," Kohli said.

Chhetri, addressing the media on Friday, praised Kohli, confirming that he indeed messaged the Indian cricketer. He explained about how Kohli and he understand each other despite playing different sports.

"Yes, I did talk to him about the decision because we are close now. More importantly, we talk about these things because we understand the next person. The other person will understand exactly the way it is. So, the ups and downs of sports, this part of retirement, when we chat, we understand that the other person understands it. I wish him all the best for his next game on May 18," Chhetri said.

After creating so many countless memories, Chhetri will bid farewell to the iconic blue jersey on June 6 when India face Kuwait. The stakes are certainly high for that game, as India have the opportunity to qualify for the third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers for the first time in their history.

"We share a lot of laughter" - Sunil Chhetri on his friendship with Virat Kohli

The friendship between Sunil Chhetri and Virat Kohli in recent years is certainly well known. There have been many instances where the two of them have met, considering they both represent teams from the same state - Kohli with RCB and Chhetri with Bengaluru FC.

The bond between them was undoubtedly built on mutual respect, with both winning numerous accolades in their respective fields. Consequently, it’s understandable why the two have struck up a friendship, given their shared tendencies to work hard, be determined, and give their all for their nation.

In fact, Chhetri spoke about his bond with Kohli last year during a show called ‘In the Stands,’ where he expressed that they often joke around while also having meaningful conversations with each other.

"We talk about a lot of normal things. We share a lot of laughter. We share a lot of jokes and a lot of funny stuff. I have had a lot of deep and meaningful chats. But, we catch up exactly from where we left it. The few times when I have felt the heat of who I am and the need to perform and the few times that he has felt the heat of who he is and the need to perform, is exactly when we have chatted," Chhetri said in 2023.

Chhetri is poised to receive a thunderous reception when he steps foot onto the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. At present, he is training with the national team in Bhubaneswar for the crucial game against Kuwait. Meanwhile, Kohli will continue to represent RCB, as they gear up to face Chennai Super Kings on May 18.
