Team Penske gives Josef Newgarden and Will Power new crew members as IndyCar engineers head to Le Mans
Josef Newgarden and his Penske teammate Will Power will have new crew members during this week's Bommarito Automotive Group 500 (June 14-15). This decision has been taken by the Mooresville, Indiana-based team in light of the 24 Hours of Le Mans event, which will take place from June 11 - 15.
IndyCar's 2024 edition of the World Wide Technology Raceway event was won by Josef Newgarden, with his Penske teammate, Scott McLaughlin, coming in at second place.
For the 2025 event, some of Penske's IndyCar crew will help out during the Le Mans event, and thus, there has been a shuffle in the crew for Newgarden and Power.
"@Team_Penske has announced its car leadership for its 3 @IndyCar entries for this weekend at @WWTRaceway. Raul Prados (temp Newgarden engineer) & Jonathan Diuguid (temp Power strategist) both unavailable due to Le Mans," Brown wrote.
While Prados and Diuguid will depart for their Le Mans duties, Bob Pockrass also uploaded a Tweet sharing details regarding the changes for Newgarden and Faustino's crew.
The above-mentioned engineers have been replaced by Luke Mason on Josef Newgarden's #2 car and David Faustino on Power's #12 challenger.
Josef Newgarden's take on P9 finish in Detroit Grand Prix
Josef Newgarden has not had the best of times in the ongoing 2025 IndyCar season. After the first seven rounds, the 34-year-old currently finds himself in 12th place in the drivers' championship with only 126 points (one top-five and three top-ten finishes).
During Round 7, the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, he again had a tough time on the racetrack. After a subpar qualifying run, he had to start the 100-lap race from P24, and because of this, he was just able to get into the top 10 by finishing in ninth place.
"Tough race today but I thought the Astemo Chevy team fought all day long. Being on a different tire strategy and having to put our set of the softer tire on late in the race, it was a battle at the end. A top 10 is a solid effort." Newgarden said in a post-race interview (via Team Penske).
The 2025 IndyCar season has only 10 Grand Prix events remaining on the race calendar. Josef Newgarden last won the championship back in back in 2019, and since then, he hasn't been able to do so.
In the 2024 campaign of America's highest class of open-wheel racing, Newgarden was nowhere in the championship title as he finished way down in P8. He managed only 401 points in comparison to the championship winner, Alex Palou (533).
Considering that the Team Penske driver is in 12th place in the 2025 standings with only 10 races remaining, he would at the least eye a finish as close as possible to the top-five if not within it.
