Maharashtra is one of those rare states in India that is renowned for its impeccable sporting legacy. From cricket to football, the state has produced its fair share of stalwarts. However, a new sport has taken the state by storm in recent years and it's kabaddi that has attracted the attention of the bulk of youngsters in the state.
The presence of a large number of players from the state in the ongoing Pro Kabaddi League 2024 has created icons who are inspiring the next generation of kabaddi players from the region. Among those from Maharashtra, who have made a big name for themselves in the league is Vishal Tate, the youngster from Nanded in Marathwada who has been making waves with his performances.
In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda, the right raider opened up about his journey, the rising popularity of kabaddi in his home state and his mantra about dealing with pressure. He said:
"Kabaddi is the most popular sport in Maharashtra now. More youngsters are getting involved than ever. Wherever you go in the state, everyone talks about the sport. Even the local tournaments are organized on the lines of the Pro Kabaddi League with a lot of investment. We also have a decent infrastructure at the school level. It's good to see the youngsters working hard and coming through the ranks."
The Haryana Steelers star also revealed how he was drawn into the sport during his school days in Pune. He said:
"My parents took me to Pune during my initial years and I attended school there. It is there that I saw kids playing the sport and was encouraged to do the same. My coach, Dinesh sir played a big role in my development. He used to take care of all other aspects as well which helped me in a big way. I continued to play the sport and eventually turned it into my profession."

With the advent of the Pro Kabaddi League, the sport has transformed rapidly in India, with several new aspects entering the game in recent years. Among other things, youngsters often grapple with the burden of expectations after a successful season and maintaining consistency becomes difficult.
Not for Vishal Tate though. The youngster revealed how he manages his training regime and keeps adequate focus on both mental and physical fitness. The right raider remarked:
"I try to remain mentally fit and keep my focus on the game. I don't let the outside noise get to me. The coaches also help us a lot in this regard. I try not to spend a lot of time on my phone and even when I'm using it I look to make it meaningful. I try to watch videos of opposition teams and try to set my plans accordingly."
The Steelers will be up against the Tamil Thalaivas next and about the tactical front, Tate said:
"We are looking to play together as a team and the players aren't chasing their individual goals. We will look to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Thalaivas and figure out how to breach their defense. I will make my raids accordingly."
