Commentary

A humdinger to say the least as not a single person in their wildest dream would have expected Rinku Singh to pull this off. Don't remember seeing someone smash five consecutive sixes to win it for his team. Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes in the T20 World Cup final in 2016 but Rinku went a step ahead, smashing five in a row. It will take some time to sink in but the IPL action continues with Sunrisers Hyderabad currently locking horns with the Punjab Kings. Rinku Singh (Player of the Match): I had the belief that I can do that, even last year I played a knock like this against Lucknow. Rana bhai asked me to keep calm. Umesh was telling me to play according to the merit of the bowler. I wasn’t thinking much, playing according to the deliveries. It was the back of the hand delivery which I clubbed for a six.

Nitish Rana (Kolkata Knight Riders captain): Definitely sir, the belief was there as Rinku had done it laast year. When two sixes were struck, the belief was there. As a captain I have to keep the belief but to be honest you can only win one out of hundred games like this. The last two overs didn’t go our way. Rashid Khan’s one over put us on the backfoot. Today’s two points solely belong to Rinku Singh. People had asked me why Rinku keeps playing the second fiddle, now I can say that if this is second role then god knows what will happen.

Rashid Khan (Gujarat Titans captain): A tough game for us especially as a captain. Same things happened with us last year when we won a few close matches. A good game of cricket and hopefully the fans would have enjoyed. (What Yash Dayal was told before the over) It was more about bowling the ball that he was comfortable with. Rinku played some unbelievable shots. He tried his best deliveries but it did not work. (On his hat-trick) Just keep it simple. Hit the right area consistently. As a bowler, I am always trying my best to hit the right areas. (Whether he was happy with the total) We got what we wanted. We wanted 190-plus and we got more than 200. In T20s, sometimes even 250 is not enough to defend. Lots of things for us to learn and we have to take positives out of this game and come back stronger. Next game, we will try our best to come back stronger. (On the Impact sub rule) It is good, something new happening in the format.

Venkatesh Iyer: It was a nail-biting finish. Our coach has always said that we can score 200 on any given day. Honestly, the wicket was quite good to bat. When the target is 200, you can't have silent overs. Unfortunately somewhere we lost our way but Lord Rinku saved the day. To be honest, we still believed that we could win. This teaches us that we should never give up until the last ball. First game, we were a little unlucky due to rain. This will be a great morale-booster for us. We want to make winning a habit. I am not surprised that we scored 200 because the players have been given clarity. I haven't been in great form. Tonight, just wanted to play late as the ball was coming onto the bat. Just tried to use the bowlers' pace as their seamers were pretty quick

Kolkata Knight Riders needed to bat out of their skin if they harboured hopes of chasing down the stiff target of 205. After an impressive opening over Mohammed Shami, KKR found momentum with a four and a six of the second over. However, two quick wickets of both opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Narayan Jagadeesan put them on the back foot.

KKR desperately needed a partnership and it was provided by the duo of Venkatesh Iyer and the skipper Nitish Rana. Venkatesh found his range right from the word go and looked in complete command of proceedings. Rana started off cautiously but slowly got into the act himself.

Iyer looked like a man possessed as he found the boundaries on a consistent basis and the GT bowlers were left scratching their heads. Rana was dismissed at a crucial juncture after making 45 off 29 deliveries but Iyer kept going hard. Just when it looked, he would take them over the line, he was dismissed by Alzarri which got GT back into the contest.

The match was in the balance when Rashid Khan came onto bowl the 17th over and turned it on its head. The magician who was having an off day up until then bagged a hat-trick to tilt the scales heavily in favour of the bowling team. Josh Little and Mohammed Shami then bowled two tight overs to almost seal the game for GT.

With 28 required off the last 5 deliveries of the match, Rinku Singh did the unthinkable by smashing Yash Dayal for five consecutive sixes. A hat-trick of sixes to full tosses was followed by a swat across the line over the long on fence for a couple more to seal the deal for KKR. The celebrations will be wild make no mistake.

This is not real, pinch me and say this is not real. What more have we store in the IPL? Rinku Singh might just have played the finest T20 knocks of all time. 28 was required of the last 5 deliveries and he smashed five monstrous sixes to seal the deal for KKR. Haven't seen anything like this in my lifetime. KKR has won by 3 wickets. A spare of thought for Yash Dayal but you cant take anything away from the left-hander. Lord Rinku, cometh the hour, cometh the man.
