Commentary

That's it then folks. Bangladesh deserves a word -- they were more competitive than the scoreboard shows but India won the moments that mattered the most. The visitors would learn and they'd feel that they were getting ever so closer to getting a Test result against the big, mighty neighbors. India's pie chart looks all green with not a slice of red. They go to Kanpur with more good headaches than bad. We'll be there with the answers as your pain-killers before, during and after that game but for now, it's the pair of Rudransh and Soorya signing off for Sportskeeda!

Ravichandran Ashwin (Player of the Match): No, not really. Every time I play in front of this crowd, it's an amazing feeling. I have watched a lot of Tests from those stands. I enjoy the game for what I am doing and not for what I get out of it. None of them gave me any birthday presents so I gave one to myself! It was an opportunity to fight. I have seen a lot of guys do that. Have to thank Jadeja, he took me through the difficult phases. It didn't sink in till Day 2. Happy to take wickets too. I make a living by bowling so it comes first. Batting comes naturally but I have struggled with my thoughts getting ahead of myself. (On Rohit joking about his batting) He updated me that we'll have a long chat so he's waiting to see how long will this go on. (Harsha says he won't ask another question) It's a shorter chat than his!

Rohit Sharma (India captain): I thought it was a great result looking at what lies ahead for us. Yes we've been playing after a long time but you're never out of cricket, you are in touch with cricket. We had a good leadup to the Test match and we got the result we wanted. (On Pant's comeback ton) He's been through some really tough times but the way he has managed through those tough times was superb to watch. He came back to the IPL and then a very successful World Cup. This is the format he loves the most. For us it was never about what he was going to do with the bat. We always knew what he had with the bat and gloves as well. It was about getting him back and giving him game time. He had an impact straightaway on the game. (On having so many options to call upon with the ball) That's how we want to build our team as well no matter what the conditions are whether we play in India or outside. Whatever the conditions have to offer we have to be ready for it. The last few years, wherever we've traveled we've had that in our armory be it seam-bowling or spin-bowling options. The guys never shy away from responsibility. Beautiful (track). The red soil pitch always has something to offer throughout the game. You need a little bit of patience as well because you don't see much happening straightaway and we've gotten used to it in India where we need something to happen every ball. This was a pitch where we had to show a lot of patience with bat and ball. We were patient enough to get those runs and with the ball too we were patient enough to put the ball in the right areas and take wickets. (On the ever-young Ravichandran Ashwin) He's the right man to answer what he does. Every time we look up to him, he's always there for us whether with the bat or the ball. And we've seen it for so many years. I don't know if I speak here will it be enough (on) what he does for the team. Probably he's the right guy to answer and he's never out of the game. The last competitive game he played was the IPL, had some fun in the TNPL and we watched him bat up the order. It was fun to watch him bat and get that hundred.

Najmul Hossain Shanto (Bangladesh captain): Yes, obviously. The positive thing is how Nahid and Hasan bowled at the start but then India batted really well. Seaming options were good, we bowled very well with the new ball. I try to contribute with the bat, I enjoy my batting. Our plan was to bat as much as we can, playing with our strengths, without thinking much about the outcome. It's an important series. The bowlers did a great job, I hope the batters would do something special in the next match.

Arun: Ashwin-Jadeja, never retire please!

Let's hear from one of India's stars and the comeback hero, Rishabh Pant: Definitely a lot special because I love playing in Chennai first of all. Secondly after injury I wanted to play all three formats. This was my first (Test) match after the comeback and I just want to get better everyday. Definitely it was emotional because coming back, I wanted to score in each and every match which did not happen. Coming back to Test cricket, I enjoyed batting there. I got a little emotional but at the end of the day, being on the field gives me more joy than anything else. I don't know what people say outside but I try to read the situation in my own way. When you are 80/3 you need to stitch a partnership which is what Gill and I did out there. When you bat with someone you share a good relationship with off the field it's really nice.

India take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series in the most emphatic fashion. Emphatic is just what they do in home Tests and Bangladesh are just the latest of many, many victims. The triumph is also India's sixth consecutive against their neighbors -- their biggest such streak!

It has come through the usual names too. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja saved the first innings, Jasprit Bumrah's four-wicket haul killed the Test in the second innings. Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant's brilliant stand in the third was the biggest positive from the Test because India could see its future in them.

And then the final innings -- set-up again by Ashwin's three-fer yesterday. Rohit didn't give him the ball in the first hour here for some reason and India went wicketless, despite the energetic spells from Siraj and Bumrah plus some good support from Jadeja.

Ashwin came back after Drinks and struck immediately, triggering a massive collapse on both ends. Ashwin took two more and Jadeja matched him wicket-for-wicket to finish things off. Bangladesh tried to fight, threw hands everywhere but the turn and bounce and India's guile and experience was, typically, too hot to handle.
