5 differences between Minecraft game and movie
The recently released A Minecraft Movie trailer was met with mixed response. While some liked what they saw, most of the fanbase was not impressed. Whether it was the presence of real people in the game world or the appearance of the mobs, multiple reasons emerged following the uproar in response to the trailer.
However, what wasn't subjective were the differences between the movie trailer and the game. While the movie is set in the blocky world, there are many differences when compared to the game, and this article discussed five of those.
NOTE: This article is subjective and reflects the writer's opinion.
Five differences between Minecraft movie and game
1) Steve’s hair and beard
Starting the list by addressing the elephant in the room: Jack Black does not resemble Steve from the game. The latter can be seen with short hair and a goatee. But the trailer shows Black, who supposedly portrays Steve, with a long salt-and-pepper beard and hair. Coupled with that, his clothes aren't accurate to the game.
Now it's not sure if this is the version of Jack who has been in the world for a long time without any tools to shave off that beard and hair. If that is the case, we could see a makeover somewhere in the movie; if not, the disappointment only gets worse.
2) Piglins in the overworld
For those unaware, piglins in the Vanilla version of Minecraft cannot stay in the overworld. Once they enter the overworld through the nether portal, they transform into zombified variants within seconds. But the trailer shows piglins freely roaming the overworld.
While they can stay in the overworld in Minecraft Legends, that isn't the case in the original game. In fact, a lot of things about the movie has been inspired by MC Legends and that begs whether the story will be inspired by it or the makers will come up with an entirely different one.
3) Ghasts as balloons
Another interesting new concept in the trailer was ghasts being used as hot air balloons. The trailer shows the piglins traveling in this way. For context, ghasts cannot be used by players or any other mob to travel. That said, it could be an interesting game mechanic.
4) Wolves howling
While wolves are present in both the game and the trailer, the latter depicts a specific trait. In one of the shots, the wolf can be seen howling with the moon in the background. This contradicts the game, as wolves bark and act like dogs.
That said, wolves howling and other animals making noises would greatly improve the overall atmosphere in-game. Minecraft needs an ambiance update to make it more immersive. The 1.22 update might bring something similar.
5) Connected buckets and hammer
In one of the shots in the trailer, we can see Jason Momoa's character use the crafting table to make something. He puts some iron ingots in the grids and then uses a tool that looks like a hammer to make two buckets that are connected using a chain link. There is no item in Minecraft that even resembles a twin bucket.
The movie is scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025 and it features some big names. A Minecraft Movie is being directed by Jared Hess who is known for his works such as Napolean Dynamite and Nacho Libre. So despite the movie getting a lot of criticism for its creative decisions, fans believe that Jared Hess might bring a great story for the viewers.
