How to create checkpoints in vanilla Minecraft
When you die in Minecraft, you will respawn at your last set point, which could be the world spawn, a bed, or a respawn anchor. However, over the years, the community has found another method of creating a checkpoint that lets players return without losing any items upon death. This can be done by creating a backup of the world before doing anything dangerous.
That said, here is a short guide on how to create an unofficial checkpoint in Minecraft.
Steps to create a checkpoint in Minecraft
1) Reach the place where you want to create a checkpoint
First, you need to understand that a checkpoint must be created in a safe location, where you're not in any danger. This means setting it right before entering a major battle or at the beginning of a difficult exploration. Picking a checkpoint is highly important since being too close to danger can lead to instant death upon respawning.
2) Make a backup of your world
After you have reached the location where you want to create a checkpoint, exit the world and go to the world list. Select your world and click on "Edit." You will see various options to edit the world. Click on "Make Backup," and this will create a backup of your world by copy-pasting all its information to a new folder.
This folder can then be accessed by a button right below "Make Backup," which will read "Open Backup Folder."
3) Head into the danger
Once you've created a backup, your entire world is essentially safe. This gives you the freedom to enter dangerous areas without fear. You can explore tricky places, enter structures filled with strong hostile mobs, and attempt bold actions without thinking too much about losing your item or going back to the respawn location.
Even if you die, simply revert to the backup world and start your journey like nothing happened. Of course, some might feel that this is not the original way of playing in survival or even hardcore mode. However, it could work for more casual players.
