How to make Minecraft 1.21 kelp farm
Kelp is a surprisingly useful resource in Minecraft 1.21. You can use it to fill water blocks, increase your composter level, and much more. When it comes to farming kelp, the method has been the same for quite some time now since Mojang hasn't tweaked the Redstone mechanic recently.
Hence, here is a simple guide to creating a kelp farm in Minecraft 1.21.
Steps to create a kelp farm in Minecraft 1.21
1) Create a platform with observers and pistons
First, you need to create a platform of 6x11 blocks, then place nine blocks as shown in the first part of the picture. Now, on one side, place one block on top of the last block, so that only eight blocks are left in the flat row.
Shift your attention to the flat row of eight blocks and place a row of eight pistons facing each other before putting eight observers on top of the pistons. Then, you must place a building block behind each piston and each observer. The second part of the picture shows how each block must be placed.
On top of the building blocks behind the pistons, place redstone dust so that it makes a line from the first to the last piston. This connects each piston with its respective block so that an observer only activates their respective piston instead of the entire line.
2) Create a storage area and the initial water flow
After setting up observers and pistons, you must create the storage system with hoppers and chests where you place an extra block on one side of the nine rows of blocks. In Minecraft, hoppers are blocks that can suck in any items and place them in chests.
Next, you must place two building blocks on top of each observer and place a half slab on top of the first building block. This will create a gully-like passage on top of the entire farm with slabs as the base. Next, place two glass blocks on top of the slabs diagonally opposite the storage area to block one side of the gully.
Once that is done, you must place water on top of both the left and right slabs. This will allow the water to flow towards the storage system on the ground floor.
3) Cover the farm with glass and fill it with water
Once you create the water flow and the storage system, you must close off the entire farm area that has observers and pistons. This can be done with glass blocks. After this, break off one side of the glass blocks, and fill the entire space with full water blocks.
Full water blocks mean that there must not be any flowing area that can steer the kelp away from the storage area. Hence, 16 water buckets must be used to fill each column of the block right from the top.
Once the area is filled with water, carefully break the slabs so that the flowing water above it meets the full water blocks seamlessly. This will essentially allow the kelp to float upwards, get affected by the flow, and come down towards the storage system, where hoppers will suck it in and store it in chests.
4) Place kelp and close off the farm
Once everything is done, you can place kelp on each block between the two rows of blocks. Finally, you can completely cover the farm from either side to stop kelp spillage.
You can then stay AFK for a bit to see how the kelp will grow underwater before getting pushed to the hopper and chest system. After a while, the chests will start filling up with kelp.
