Minecraft Console Edition creator reveals early gameplay of new blocky builder game

4JStudios, the company that developed Minecraft for older gaming consoles, recently shared a teaser of their new blocky, building game heavily inspired by the original sandbox they used to work on. The new game is called Reforj and a gameplay clip just went live on their YouTube channel. Long after the legacy console edition was discontinued, 4JStudios is back with its very own title.

Here is everything to know about Reforj and how the developer is making it unique in its own way.

Minecraft Console Edition developer released a snippet of their new open-world game

Details from Reforj's new teaser

On October 4, 2024, 4JStudios released a new clip showcasing early gameplay footage for Reforj. The video starts off with a player spawning on a hill and flying down from it, showcasing the terrain, overall texture, and graphical quality of the game. Though Reforj does not look like Minecraft, it does have some visual cues from it.

The terrain is not entirely made out of blocks but does have a low tessellation quality compared to complete blocks in the sandbox game. The textures of the terrain itself are much higher in quality since no pixels are visible like in Minecraft blocks and items.

Further in the video, we see the character itself in third-person, which looks completely different from in-game characters in Minecraft.

The building mechanic in Reforj is also showcased, which is similar, yet unique to the game. As per the teaser, players will be able to shave off the blocks that are placed to create new kinds of angular shapes, something that is not possible in Mojang's sandbox. The video ends with the player making a unique house with angular-shaped parts.

Reforj's development journey

Reforj is 4JStudios' second game after they left developing Minecraft for consoles in 2017. Reforj was announced in September 2024 on various official social media posts. The game company then invited several Minecraft content creators to test out the pre-alpha version of the game and share their thoughts on their respective YouTube channels.

Since then, this clip has been their first official showcase of the game in video form. It is worth noting that this game is currently in the pre-alpha stage and a lot can change from now to its official release. Moreover, its release date is also yet to be announced.
