Minecraft creaking mob: What we know so far
The creaking is an upcoming Minecraft mob confirmed for the Winter 2024 update. This mob was announced at Minecraft Live 2024, and, surprisingly, it was the only mob showcased at the event. It is an asymmetrical mob with three glowing eyes and prefers to rush at its target from behind.
The creaking is expected to arrive in Minecraft 1.21.4 for Java Edition and 1.21.50 for Bedrock Edition. While no official release date has been announced, fans should prepare to face this creepy mob in Winter 2024. Here’s what players should know about the creaking in Minecraft.
What is the creaking in Minecraft?
The creaking is a tall, creepy mob that spawns naturally in the Pale Garden, a new variant of the Dark Forest biome. This mob is slightly taller than the player's character, and its texture resembles tree trunks found in the Pale Garden biome. Pale hanging moss that generates in the biome also covers the creaking’s body, allowing it to blend into the forest surroundings.

What does the creaking do in Minecraft?
One unique feature of the creaking is that when it spawns in Pale Gardens at night, it only moves toward the player if they aren’t looking at it. If any player has it in their sight, the creaking will remain stationary. This spooky mob isn’t too powerful, dealing only three to four hearts of damage.
Attacking the creaking doesn’t kill it. Players can hit the mob indefinitely, but it won’t take damage or die, despite having just half a heart of health. Instead, the creaking is linked to a unique block known as the creaking heart, a type of wood log found deep within Pale Garden trees.
When you hit the creaking, the creaking Heart block creates resin clumps on the pale oak logs around it. Players can then collect resin clumps to craft blocks of resin or smelt them into resin bricks for building.
How to kill the creaking in Minecraft
The only way to kill the creaking is to locate its heart hidden in one of the pale oak trees and destroy it. Once this block is destroyed, the creaking will crumble and die.
As of now, the mob doesn’t drop any XP or items upon death. Instead, you will gain experience points from breaking the creaking Heart block connected to it.
Other things to know about the creaking in Minecraft
The creaking is the first Minecraft mob to feature an asymmetrical design, adding an extra layer of creepiness to this odd creature. Though immune to all direct attacks, it remains vulnerable to fall damage and can die from breaking an ankle. Surprisingly, with only half a heart of health, it can perish from falling just a few blocks.
Lore enthusiasts will appreciate the unique interaction between illagers and the creaking. Apparently, all illager mobs are frightened by the creaking and run away when they encounter it. This adds an interesting connection, as the Pale Garden is a new variant of the Dark Forest biome, where illagers build their woodland mansions.
