Minecraft fans left confused by the game's name change on the iOS App Store
Minecraft is going through a lot of changes. Developers at Mojang Studios recently announced a complete restructuring of its update system, focusing on smaller and more frequent updates over the year instead of one big update. But another change noted by many players has left them confused. Mojang Studios has changed the name of the game on the iOS store.
Redditor u/Khaotikrypt shared a screenshot of the game’s page on the App Store showing the changed name and sought the community's opinion. The name of the game has been changed to “Minecraft: Play with Friends.”
Reacting to this post, u/Charlie43229 said that this change could be for search engine optimization reasons. For those unaware, search engine optimization is the process of adding words or phrases that help search engines like Google present the result.
But this wasn't good enough for u/R2-T4, who said that changing the name for SEO reasons seems unwise as Minecraft is one of the most popular games ever. They also claimed that no one is searching for a game where they build things with friends for this apparent search engine optimization to work.
u/BadVinegar said that this might work for search engine optimization performance as many on the phone might not know what game to play with friends and searching for something similar might show Minecraft. u/beeurd disagreed, saying that modern SEO does not require such accurate wordings to determine the result and it might be about showing options when users are looking for something else with similar words.
u/Charlie43229 reiterated that it is unwise on Microsoft’s part to change the name of the best-selling video game of all time. On the other hand, u/woalk insisted that it does not hurt the game if the change brings just one more download.

Minecraft is witnessing a host of changes and events, from the first look of the movie trailer to new updates. The teaser trailer was a big boost in the popularity of the game. Unfortunately, the community wasn't too keen, especially with the cast members and mobs.
But things got exciting when Mojang Studios announced that Minecraft Live will be held twice a year and that the game will witness smaller but frequent updates. The first Minecraft Live will be held on September 28 and will feature some interesting drops.
