Minecraft: How to make automatic door

Minecraft players can create all kinds of automatic contraptions with the help of a resource called redstone. This has enabled the community to come up with builds like automatic farms, sorting systems, and more. Even simple activities like opening and closing the door can now be completely automated using redstone-activated blocks.

However, while some players are content with simply placing pressure plates on either side of a door, others may opt to create a more complicated automatic redstone door.

Here is a short guide to making an automatic redstone door in Minecraft.

Steps to make automatic redstone door in Minecraft

1) Resources needed

There are some resources you need to make a simple redstone door. All of these components are essential for crafting one two-block automatic door. In case players want to create a four-block door that four pistons pull on either side, they will have to double these resources.

Here is the list of all the blocks and items needed for the build:

  • 2 pressure plates
  • 2 sticky pistons
  • a stack of building blocks (those that will create the wall around the door)
  • 1 redstone torch
  • 6 redstone dust
  • 1 redstone repeater

2) Place sticky pistons and activate them

First, you must place two sticky pistons vertically on top of each other facing the same side. On the piston side, attach two wood planks or any other block that you want your door to be. After that, place a block right behind the bottom piston, opposite to the piston leg. Place a redstone dust on top of it, which will essentially connect both piston blocks to work together.

Next, place a redstone torch below the block on which the redstone dust is placed. This will activate both pistons and extend them, along with the blocks attached to them. The upper parts of the contraption can now be covered as showcased in the picture above.

3) Create the underground connection to the pressure plate

After placing the redstone torch and activating the pistons, connect the rest of the contraption to the pressure plate. This will automatically enable the pistons to retract and open the door.

To do this, place a redstone repeater diagonally below the torch on the side, the side on which you want to place the pressure plate. After that, create a line of redstone dust going from the repeater toward the piston door as shown in the picture.

Finally, place a block right on top of the last redstone dust line and add a pressure plate on top of it. If the entire contraption is properly connected, you should be able to stand on the pressure plate and make the pistons retract, removing the blocks in front of you and opening the door.

This process can be repeated on the other side as well, allowing players to automatically open and close the doors from both sides. If players want a four-block door, they need to do this exact contraption on the other side of the structure as well.

Once the redstone circuit is complete and working as intended, it can be covered with regular building blocks of any choice. The area can also be further decorated to hide the redstone contraption at work underneath it.
