Minecraft Jack o'Lantern guide: Recipe, uses, and more
The Jack o' Lantern in Minecraft is a special type of light-emitting block mainly used for decoration. In comparison, they're among the more beautiful light blocks in the game that players can craft and use in various ways. They also have some interesting implementations in the game that developers activate each year.
Here is everything to know about Jack o' Lantern block in Minecraft.
How to make Minecraft Jack o'Lantern
First, find or grow pumpkins. Pumpkin blocks can be generated in most biomes in the Overworld in the form of random patches. They can also be found in woodland mansions, pillager outposts, and taiga villages. When found, shear these pumpkins. Shears can be made with two iron ingots diagonally placed on the crafting table.
Once a pumpkin is found, right-click on the block with shears in hand to carve it. This will change the block state to a carved pumpkin.
After this, mine the carved pumpkin with any tool, the fastest being the axe.
Finally, place the carved pumpkin and a torch on a crafting table as shown in the picture above to craft a Jack o' Lantern in the game.
How to use Minecraft Jack o'Lantern
Once a Jack o' Lantern is made, it is best used as a decorative light block, as it can emit light Level 15, which is the strongest in the game. It can be a great addition to any spooky structure or area, especially with a Halloween theme.
Another major use of a Jack o' Lantern is to create iron and snow golems from it. Both these golems are essential allies who fight various hostile mobs like zombies, skeletons, and spiders.
Iron golem can be made with four iron blocks that are made from nine iron ingots, and a Jack o' Lantern as its head. While the snow golem can be made from two snow blocks and a Jack o' Lantern as its head. The block placement configurations can be seen in the pictures above.
It is also worth noting that the Jack o' Lantern should be the last block to be placed in the configuration, otherwise neither of the golems would come to life.
Another unique use of Jack o' Lanterns is to light up a river or ocean bed. Since a higher light level does not allow any hostile mob to spawn, this can be used to stop drowned zombies from spawning underwater. Although other light blocks can illuminate river and ocean beds, Jack o' Lantern is the easiest to obtain or craft.
Interesting things about Minecraft Jack o'Lantern
Apart from the aforementioned crafting method and uses, the Jack o' Lantern mainly has one unique use in the game. On October 31 every year, when Halloween falls, Mojang Studios activates a special feature in the game.
This special feature is that hostile mobs like zombies, zombie villagers, husks, and drowned have a 22.5% chance of spawning with a carved pumpkin on their heads, and a 2.5% chance of spawning with a Jack o' Lantern on their heads. This feature has been in the sandbox since 2012.
In conclusion, the Jack o' Lantern is an extremely interesting light-emitting block that can be made easily and has several uses in the game, most notably to create golems and spawn-proof water beds.
