A Minecraft Movie's behind-the-scenes video sheds light on Steve's past

Mojang recently released behind-the-scenes footage of A Minecraft Movie, coming soon in 2025. The video provided exclusive insight into how the film was made, and a sneak peek into the story, the characters, and more. When the film's teaser was released earlier this year, many were fascinated to see Steve played by Jack Black.

In this latest BTS video, we see more of Minecraft's most beloved character and a peek into his backstory according to the filmmakers.

Sneak peek at Steve's past depicted in A Minecraft Movie

The player receives Steve as the default in-game skin when they enter a new Minecraft world. Over the years, it has become an iconic character, not only in Minecraft's community but also in the gaming industry. Since Mojang never revealed any major backstory of Steve, most players have their own speculation of who the character was.

In the most recent BTS video of A Minecraft Movie, we see how the filmmakers showed Steve and depicted his backstory. While explaining his past, Jack Black narrated how Steve always wanted to create and give free rein to his imagination.

During this narration, the video showed Steve as a kid in one of the shots. The kid was wearing a blue sweater, dark blue jeans, mining gear, and holding a pickaxe. The shot then cuts to Jack Black becoming the infamous in-game character with the same clothing and mining gear. This entire scene was shot in the film's real-world scenario at a construction site.

Both younger and adult Steve were seen walking toward a mineshaft at the construction site. In the mineshaft shot, there was a board in front of the shaft's entry that read "absolutely no children allowed," which could mean that younger Steve was not allowed to work in the mine even if he arrived there with mining gear when he was a kid.

This version of Steve's backstory will be depicted in A Minecraft Movie. That said, the character's backstory will remain a topic of discussion. THis is because Mojang wanted the player base to create their own stories and let their imaginations run wild.

Other details about A Minecraft Movie showcased in the BTS video

Apart from Steve's unique backstory, the BTS video also gave a sneak peek at the backstories of other characters portrayed by Jason Momoa, Emma Myres, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. Clips of them recording scenes and joking around the set between takes were also shown. So was the production design of the sets, including how several blocks were physically made by the set design team.

The video also contained a segment that portrayed how several Minecraft YouTubers arrived on the film's set and were involved in the film's production. Content creators like DanTDM, Aphmau, LDShadowLady, and Mumbo Jumbo were featured in the BTS video. The filmmakers mentioned how these popular and long-standing Minecraft players had had a major role in shaping the film.
