Minecraft is finally getting a feature-length movie after years of wait and with the release of the first teaser trailer, things are not looking great for the blocky game. Millions of fans were eagerly waiting for the first look of the movie. While the news of it being a live-action adaptation did raise some eyebrows, everyone had their fingers crossed. But when the trailer dropped, a large chunk of the fanbase did not like it at all.

Reasons why the Minecraft movie trailer is getting backlash

This was a bizarre decision, as the movie would have been much better and true to the original game if it had been completely animated. Having real people in the world of Minecraft just feels bizarre as everyone is used to seeing blocky visuals in the game.
But what makes it even worse is how the cast members look, particularly Jack Black as Steve. Everyone who has played the game knows who Steve is - the face of Minecraft. And yet, for some reason, the makers decided to let Jack Black keep his long hair and beard.
Black's look in the movie doesn't resemble Steve at all. Perhaps the story might reveal something about his specific look, but in the trailer, he is not very convincing.
Another reason why people don't like the trailer is because of how the world looks. It has a clay-like appearance with oversaturated colors and everything appears unfitting and fake, especially considering all the human characters in the frame.
The mobs in the game are its most recognizable elements. The creeper, the sheep, the bees, etc all have unique looks. But for some reason, the makers decided to go with a semi-realistic look for the mobs. The creeper has green fur while the sheep has a realistic face on a square body.
Some fans pointed out that it seemed like someone used Photoshop to create a realistic-looking version of the Minecraft mobs, which is why they look uncanny and bizarre.
Since the movie is scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025, in the US, there is little time left to make any major changes. Perhaps the makers might make some minor changes or work on color correction to improve the look. But it seems somewhat unlikely.
