Minecraft coming to life with a $110 million theme park deal in the US and the UK
Minecraft has joined hands with one of the biggest branded entertainment companies to launch a $110 million theme park in the US and the UK. This comes as no surprise since the sandbox is one of the most popular titles, with over 170 million monthly active players. The pixellated game world is set to come alive in this proposed theme park.
Here's everything you need to know about the Minecraft theme park.
Minecraft theme park set to bring the pixellated world to life
Minecraft has partnered with Merlin Entertainments to launch the world's first permanent location-based immersive theme park. This comes just after the villager rescue live experience in Texas received massive support and positive feedback from the community.
The park plans to bring the game's adventures to life through immersive and interactive attractions in fixed locations around the world, starting with the United States and the United Kingdom — two of the biggest consumer markets for the best-selling game. This will be Merlin's first project with a global gaming brand in creating engaging experiences based on video games.
Kayleen Walters, Vice-President of Franchise Development for Gaming at Microsoft believes that this partnership will be a new way for them to bring the massively popular world of the game alive:
"Partnering with Merlin Entertainments is an incredibly exciting step for us at Mojang Studios. Merlin's expertise in creating world-class attractions makes them the perfect partner to help us bring Minecraft to life in new and immersive ways in permanent locations around the globe."
The theme park is set to launch in the US and the UK between 2026 and 2027. It will include Minecraft-themed accommodations, retail, food and beverage, as well as an exclusive game-themed ride. They also expect to expand these experiences globally in the future.
Scott O'Neil, the Chief Executive Officer of Merlin Entertainments believes that the theme park will be revolutionary:
"This is an exciting opportunity for our Merlin Magic Making team, working collaboratively with Mojang Studios to bring cross-reality experiences, themed accommodation and other elements to life for the largest gaming community in the world.”
The proposed theme park will allow players a real-life interactive way of engaging with popular features and concepts from the game's universe. Similar to the Villager Rescue live experience in Texas, this experience will allow players a chance to enjoy the game in a new and fun way.
Mojang's news of expansion into more hands-on experience comes right around the release of the much-anticipated A Minecraft Movie, a live-action recreation of the sandbox world. The film features a star-studded cast of actors like Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, and more. It is set to release on April 4, 2025.
