WWE/MMA News: CM Punk explains why he didn't shake hands with Mickey Gall
The traditional staredowns at the weigh-ins have always been either intense or just plain bland. Lights are shining, cameras are clicking, the background music is raising the adrenaline. The time has come for the weigh-in of the fight that majority of the audience has been looking forward to: Mickey Gall(2-0) vs Phil “CM Punk” Brooks(0-0).
Mr Gall comes out first, weighs in at 170.5lbs and waits for the staredown. “His opponent, making his MMA debut CM Punk” the announcement is made and out walks the man who has been heckled, ostracised and is here to prove a point more than anyone else.
He weighs in at 170 lbs and walks towards Gall.
Mickey forwards his hand for the code of honor handshake and Phil just stares at him with intent and aggression. His opponent responds by talking smack and Punk stares on, waiting to prove a point.
“Mickey Gall and CM Punk ladies and gentlemen..” the staredown ends and Punk gives one to the crowd.
At the post weigh-in interview, when asked about why he didn't forward his hand, he responded:
"I don't know, He was stuttering. He kept repeating, ‘Oh you don't want to shake my hand, you don't want to shake my hand' or something like that. I'm not here to shake anybody's hand. I'm here to punch people in the face."
Punk, 37, although age might not be on his side but has been resilient and level-headed. Bouncing back from a shoulder injury he faced during training and a surgery for a herniated disc, he is ready to make his debut tomorrow at UFC 203.
"I think once I had an opponent, once I had a date and once I was free of that damn herniated disc I was walking around with for who knows how long, I was a different person," said Punk "It's one thing to train, it's another thing to train with a singular purpose and that's what I got in Mickey Gall. I know this is a difficult sport to master.
I look forward to mastering it sometime and I realize that will probably never happen, but I will get as good as I possibly can."
Before the fight, the former pro wrestler had to go through a massive weigh cut and it sure wasn't easy for him but the debutant has made it and he looks the best he has in years. This fight won't be what majority of the purists are expecting it to be, Punk sure has some tricks up his sleeve.
