Conor McGregor and Urijah Faber announced as coaches for The Ultimate Fighter 22
UFC President Dana White yesterday announced the coaches for the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter 22 "U.S. vs. Europe." And it's none other than the new interim Featherweight title winner Conor McGregor and WEC champion Urijah Faber.
But this time, the two coaches will not fight each other at the end of the season. Coincidentally, the two fighters were involved in a backstage scuffle before Conor’s UFC 189 title bout with Faber’s Alpha Male teammate, Chad Mendes.
This decision by White came as a surprise to a lot of people as many had expected 145-pound division champion Jose Aldo to be the coaching counterpart of McGregor. But with that brief run-in backstage, Faber was the chosen one. Dana White made this announcement during the TUF 21 finale broadcast, as he said:
“Just to let everybody know, McGregor will not fight Urijah Faber, These guys are just coaching, mentoring these young fighters. The best decision was to get Conor McGregor for the Europeans. And Faber is such a great coach and has a lot to offer the U.S. team.”
TUF 22 will premiere this September 9th on FOX Sports 1, with a two-hour debut episode. As you might already know, there will be 16 lightweights competing for the title, with eight Europeans and eight Americans.
