Derrick Lewis suspects the media has tried to sabotage his fights in Texas

With his fight approaching this weekend, Derrick Lewis was questioned as to why his luck in his home state of Texas has taken a nosedive in recent history. The UFC heavyweight jokingly blamed the MMA media for sabotaging him.

'The Black Beast' is one of the best knockout artists in the sport, having collected 21 KO/TKO victories in his 37-fight career thus far. Possessing such frightening power has led him to wins over some elite talent in his division, with the sickening finish of Curtis Blaydes being one of his most notable wins to date.

As he sat down to fulfill his media obligations, Derrick Lewis was asked why he believes his form in Texas isn't the same as it used to be, prompting the heavy-hitter to blame those in attendance.

"I don't know [what happened], man. I think somebody out there doing voodoo on me, I don't know. Maybe it's the media, there's something in the air, man. There's something in the air because there's like new people every time I'm doing interviews now."

In typical Derrick Lewis fashion, he had fun with some of the questions asked on media day and insisted that somebody out there is using voodoo on him to purposely make him lose.

The 37-year-old can rest easy knowing that his next matchup will be held at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, over a thousand miles away from the state of Texas. On November 19, Lewis will step into the octagon for the third time this year and lock horns with the much younger Sergey Spivak, who currently has five wins in his last six.

Derrick Lewis' recent poor form in Texas

Up until recently, Derrick Lewis was 10-0 in Texas, dating all the way back to his debut in the sport of MMA. So when did the powerhouse start losing in his home state?

The first loss occurred when he attempted to capture the interim UFC heavyweight championship in a clash against Ciryl Gane, which ended with a TKO win for the Frenchman.

After a win against Chris Daukaus in Vegas, Lewis returned to Texas in back-to-back fights, losing to both Tai Tuivasa and Sergei Pavlovich via knockout. This gave him a 0-3 record in the state over the past two years.
