Islam Makhachev is a Russian mixed martial artist and as of December 29, 2024, he is the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion. Hailing from Makhachkala, Dagestan, Islam Makhachev already has three successful title defenses to his name since becoming the champion in 2022. For his first-ever championship bout, Makhachev was tested against the former UFC lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 in October 2022. Within 3 minutes and 16 seconds into the second round of the bout, Makhachev submitted Oliveira via an arm-triangle choke in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

For his last showdown, the pound-for-pound King faced the former UFC interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier in a five-rounder at UFC 302 in Newark, New Jersey, United States. The fight took place on June 1, 2024, and Makhachev submitted Poirier via brabo choke at 2:42 in the fifth round of the bout. He also earned the 'Performance of the Night' along with a 'Fight of the Night' bonus for his performance showcase and dominance over the American fighter. Moreover, the lightweight champion is now gearing up for his fourth title defense against his former rival Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311 on January 18, 2024.
