Islam Makhachev is a professional mixed martial arts star who competes in the lightweight division. Currently signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), he is the reigning lightweight champion in the leading professional mixed martial arts promotion and is also ranked as the No. 1 UFC men’s pound-for-pound fighter. Initially, Islam Makhachev trained in taekwondo as a child. Later on, he tried his hand at soccer and played the sport for a couple of years. Islam Makhachev eventually found sanctuary under the legendary combat sports coach and former UFC champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. He trained Makhachev in freestyle wrestling.

Makhachev made his professional mixed martial arts debut on August 1, 2010, against Magomed Bekbolatov. He defeated him by a unanimous decision to win the fight. After starting his professional career, Makhachev fought in multiple fight promotions before venturing into the UFC. After compiling a spectacular professional record of 12 wins and 0 losses, Islam Makhachev eventually made his professional debut in the UFC. Leo Kuntz welcomed Islam Makhachev inside the octagon on May 23, 2015, at UFC 192. He submitted Kuntz in the second round and won the fight. Makhachev won the lightweight championship of the promotion by defeating Charles Oliveira on October 22, 2022, by a second-round submission when the duo faced each other in a vacant lightweight title showdown. Makhachev has headlined four pay-per-view events as of now and has defended his lightweight title thrice since winning it in 2022.

Islam Makhachev Nickname

Islam Makhachev is mostly referred to by his name. Javier Mendez revealed in an interview in 2022 that he tried to give Islam Makhachev a nickname but the lightweight champion asserted that he should be referred to by his original name and, hence, he doesn’t have a nickname.

The reigning lightweight king is popularly known by the name of Islam Makhachev in the combat sports universe. He, however, is originally named Islam Ramazanovich Makhachev. He is a Russian national and was born in Makhachkala, Dagestan, USSR, on October 27, 1991.
