Islam Makhachev sets pound-for-pound goal after announcing partnership with popular energy drink brand
Islam Makhachev has announced a new partnership with Monster Energy.
Makhachev received some added support before his UFC lightweight title defense at UFC 284. Although the UFC has strict rules for sponsorships, the Russian signed a deal with one of the few companies that are allowed. Khabib Nurmagomedov’s longtime training partner made the announcement on Twitter by saying:
“Happy to share great news that I’m joining @monsterenergy team. Together we will reach new heights. Let’s get that P4P #1 rank"
Makhachev continues to evolve into a superstar with his new Monster Energy partnership. The Russian joined the UFC in May 2015, winning his promotional debut before losing for the first and only time against Adriano Martins with a first-round knockout.
Since then, Makhachev has been unbeatable, winning 11 consecutive fights, including seven inside the distance. The 31-year-old reached the top of the mountain in October 2022 by becoming the UFC lightweight champion against Charles Oliveira. He is now looking to defend his throne for the first time at UFC 284.
Islam Makhachev reveals that UFC 284 is completely sold out
On February 11, Islam Makhachev will headline UFC 284 with the 155-pound title on the line in Perth, Australia. The Russian is taking on reigning featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who looks to solidify his legacy by becoming a two-division UFC champion.
After recently saying that the UFC wasn’t promoting the pay-per-view event enough, Makhachev provided a positive update on ticket sales on Twitter:
“People is looking for tickets for UFC Perth, but it’s completely SOLD OUT! Most trending fight as of today! Australia, we going to make some noise, be ready"
Makhachev is entering UFC 284 as a massive betting favorite. The lightweight king has also discredited Volkanovski by underestimating his size and wrestling pedigree. With that said, ‘The Great’ is the number one pound-for-pound fighter and should never be overlooked.
Makhachev vs. Volkanovski will be joined by several intriguing matchups, including an interim featherweight title fight between Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett in the co-main event. The winner is expected to fight ‘The Great’ once he returns from the lightweight division.
The rest of the UFC 284 fight card is filled with Australian talent, including Jack Della Maddalena, Tyson Pedro, Justin Tafa, Jimmy Crute, and more.
