Junior dos Santos: "I'm next on the rankings, I must fight the champion Werdum"
After his third round submission victory over Cain Velasquez last week (Sat., June 13, 2015) in the main event of UFC 188, Fabricio Werdum is now the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion of the world. With many MMA fighters eyeing his title, Junior dos Santos is the one who is top on the list (Or atleast he feels so).
Speaking to Sportv after UFC 188 event, Santos said he should be the one facing "Vai Cavalo" next, based on his ranking (No 2). His words:
"I'm working towards that, no doubt about it. I think this result benefits me a little. I can't say I was cheering for Werdum or Velasquez, it didn't matter to me. But people were saying it wasn't the time for a fourth fight with Cain, so I was against the politics. Now, if I'm next on the rankings, I must fight the champion. I think this Werdum win clears up the division and I can get this title shot I want so bad."
When asked about his opinion on Werdum vs Velasquez fight, JDS gave props to Werdum for his strategy :
"Kudos to Werdum because he would attack, stop, breathe and attack again. He got a guillotine that was pretty much perfect. It was a mistake Velasquez knew he couldn't make and Werdum was waiting for him to make. It all fell into place."
Dos Santos last outing was with Stipe Miocic at UFC on FOX 13 last December, which he won it via unanimous decision. With Werdum also in hot form (nine wins out of the last 10 fights), it would be interesting to see whether Junior can reclaim the heavyweight title.
