Junior dos Santos vs. Overeem set for Dec. 19, Edgar to face Holloway next?
- And it’s finally happening, Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos will be stepping into the octagon again after his bout against Stipe Miocic.
He would have a chance to silence Alistar Overeem when they would fight it out at UFC on FOX 17 mixed martial arts (MMA) event on Dec. 19, 2015, inside Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.
Dos Santos (17-3) has been through a layoff period due to countless injuries and has been a surgically-repaired fighter. ‘Cigano’ had last faced Stripe Miocic and came out with a close decision victory.
This time around he faces ‘Demolition Man’ Overeem (39-14, 1 NC), who is coming off two consecutive wins against Stefan Struve and Roy Nelson. If he goes over Dos Santos, a title shot would be right around the corner.
It would be a very interesting fight and the UFC on FOX 17 card, which has shaped up to be a very potent one indeed. It is headlined by Lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos who would defend his title against ‘The Cowboy’ Donald Cerrone. Nate Diaz would be making a return against lightweight "Menace" Michael Johnson.
- The Max Holloway and Charles Oliviera fight was expected to be a fight of the year candidate but ended up being a very ‘anti-climatic’ fight due to Oliviera suffering a micro-tear in his esophagus just one minute and 39 seconds into the fight.
Holloway celebrated his victory which went a little overboard and post-fight called out Frankie Edgar for his next fight. Max tied Connor McGregor with seven consecutive wins in a row.
Post-fight, the ever-so-humble Holloway urged the UFC to book the inaugural UFC Hawaii event and a no.1 contenders match between the ‘Blessed’ and ‘The Answer’ This is what he had to say:
"I think Frankie [does] deserve a shot [at the title]. But if he isn't going to fight for the title soon, then - I don't know what the UFC wants to do, but let's go to UFC Hawaii. Dana White, Sean Shelby make it happen. Me and Frankie Edgar, I guarantee we can sell it out down there."
Edgar came out with a quick response and made his intentions clear of fighting at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 22 Finale in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was the tweet he posted:
The fight is very much a possibility and the bout would be for a shot at the Featherweight title being on the line.
