UFC News: John Kavanagh says Conor isn't considering dropping a title after UFC 205
If Conor McGregor can emerge victorious after his match-up with Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205, the promotion will have quite the predicament on their hands. With a win, McGregor will become the first man in UFC history to hold two titles in different weight classes at the same time.
UFC President Dana White has made it clear that if McGregor wins in New York, he will be forced to drop one of the titles.
McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, recently joined Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting on The MMA Hour to discuss the predicament. In the interview, Kavanagh admitted that from what he has heard, McGregor has no intentions of dropping either title:
"I have not heard a hint of him giving up the belt. He has never said to me, ‘Oh, I'm gonna hand back the 45 or the 55.' Any time I've heard him talk about it, he's been very clear, very loud, very vocal about saying he fights very often. Look how close he is from fighting, literally just a couple of months ago. It's not unusual for a champion to defend the belt once a year or twice a year."
McGregor won the undisputed featherweight title by knocking out longtime champ Jose Aldo, in their main event meeting at UFC 194 in December. The brash Irishman will now attempt to secure the lightweight title as well in his clash with Alvarez in the main event of the UFC’s Madison Square Garden card. This has left many fighters disgruntled about the fact that he could hold up two divisions at the same time.
Alvarez and McGregor will meet in the main event of UFC 205 for the lightweight title live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.
