MMA News: Former WWE superstar CM Punk teases return at UFC 225
What’s the story?
UFC Fighter CM Punk has yet to make his return to the octagon, but the former WWE Superstar took to Twitter to express interest in returning at a future event.
Punk teased interest in making some type of return at the UFC 225 show in Chicago, IL.
In case you didn’t know...
The Straight Edge mixed martial artist rose to fame as a professional wrestler on the independent scene before becoming increasingly popular in the WWE. Punk would become a five-time world champion and the longest reigning WWE Champion of the last 25 years before leaving the company in 2014 following health issues and creative differences.
The heart of the matter
The former WWE Champion was intentionally vague on his response to the UFC 225 announcement, so there’s no telling what Punk’s status will be for the show.
Punk will more than likely show up on the program, but whether he will compete is far from set in stone.
After his devastating defeat at the hands of Mickey Gall at UFC 203, Dana White initially expressed the idea that Punk didn’t belong with the company. Despite those comments, White’s comments during an interview with the Associated Press from January revealed that the Cult of Personality will get his second chance to compete in the UFC.
"I like that guy. He's a good dude. He wants to give it another shot. I'm going to give it to him."
Many professional wrestling fans still wish for Punk to abandon his MMA career and resume wrestling either in WWE or other wrestling companies like New Japan Pro Wrestling or Ring of Honor, but the Second City Saint has been adamant about not returning to the wrestling world.
What’s next?
With Punk and White on the same page, there’s only a matter of time before the UFC announces his next bout.
Punk would probably get some good crowd support if he fights at UFC 225, but there’s no guarantee that he will fight on that show.
Author’s take
Returning to Chicago for what could be his final fight in the UFC would be the best way to go for Punk.
