MMA Rumours: McGregor to main event UFC 205 at Madison Square Garden
The UFC is rumoured to host its first ever event in New York after battling to make MMA legal in the State. With an idea to make a ‘bang’ at their maiden event in NY state, the company is planning to host a mega-event for the fans who have never witness a UFC event in their hometown, New York City.
There isn’t a better option than The Notorious one, Connor McGregor, who can make a spectacular first impression and leave the crowd awestruck? Yes, there are rumours that the UFC is planning a super fight between the current featherweight champion and lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title.
It’s a bumper year for Mystic Mac! First, he captured the UFC featherweight title, followed by two big super-fights with Diaz that earned him millions. Now, according to Bjpenn.com, he gets his promised UFC lightweight title shot one more time.
Previously, Conor had been booked to take on then lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos for the UFC lightweight championship, but RDA pulled out citing a broken foot. He was later replaced by Nate Diaz, who took the fight on ten days short notice only to win the match via rear naked choke.
Recently, McGregor won his rematch against Nate Diaz with a controversial majority decision. After the bout, UFC President Dana White stated that the featherweight champion must go back to his division and defend his belt or will have to vacate it.
Though the new rumour contradicts White’s comments, perhaps the UFC can bend the rules for the money man McGregor and grant him his chance to be the first person to hold two UFC titles simultaneously.
This won’t be the first time he is attempting to win two titles. Prior to his UFC career, McGregor held the Cage Warrior Featherweight and Lightweight Championship titles.
