Alexander Volkanovski discusses being in a tough spot, sees Max Holloway winning at UFC 308 as key

Alexander Volkanovski is aiming for a UFC 312 spot and, according to statements made in a recent Submission Radio interview, is banking on Max Holloway being victorious at UFC 308. A win for his rival would be ideal for Volkanovski, who wants to fight as soon as possible.

According to the Australian, an Ilia Topuria win would likely lead to him fighting for the featherweight title at a later date. Meanwhile, Holloway, who fights more often and some suggest is likely easier to negotiate with, could be willing to face him at UFC 312. The event will be held in Sydney, New South Wales, Volkanovski's home state.

The former champ said:

"What makes it likely that I fight soon and fight here in Sydney is Max winning [at UFC 308]. I think the chance of me fighting in Australia in Sydney in February is if Max wins. The chance is a lot higher and I am picking him to win."

It is only natural for Volkanovski to favor a Holloway win. Topuria knocked him out within two rounds back at UFC 298, while 'The Great' has beaten Holloway thrice and would be an ideal foe.

Their first fight was a strategic masterclass by Volkanovski, who countered Holloway's sniper-like jab with calf kicks every time 'Blessed' extended his stance to land the blow. Their subsequent rematch though, was more competitive, with Holloway faking the jab to draw out Volkanovski's calf kick.

Once 'The Great' kicked empty air and had to reset his stance, Holloway pounced with combinations over the top. Alas, it was not enough, with Volkanovski stealing the later rounds.

However, their trilogy bout was a lopsided beatdown, with Volkanovski proving to be too fast and too sharp.

Alexander Volkanovski is also interested in an interim featherweight title fight with Diego Lopes

While Alexander Volkanovski is determined to recapture his featherweight title, he is also open to facing Diego Lopes for an interim title.

The Brazilian is currently on a hot streak of five consecutive wins, including three finishes and a recent win over former two-time featherweight title challenger Brian Ortega.

Volkanovski added:

"Anything with gold with it, I'll be happy, so that'll just lock me in for whoever it is that wins that [UFC 308 featherweight title fight] anyway. So even if it's interim, that's still a big one. I'd say it'd be an exciting one with Lopes."

Fortunately for Volkanovski, the interest is mutual, as Lopes is also open to facing him.
