Alex Volkanovski's coach changed his mind about UFC 284 result after rewatching the fight

Alex Volkanovski lost to Islam Makhachev last weekend at UFC 284. However, many felt that the Australian was unfairly robbed of a win in Perth. After rewatching the fight footage, Volkanovski's coach Joe Lopez is also convinced that his pupil deserved the judges' nod against Makhachev.

During a recent interview with The AllStar's John Hyon Ko, Lopez stated that although he initially felt 'The Great' lost the second round of the bout, he is now convinced that Volkanovski won the round after rewatching the footage.

The coach suggested that given both fighters had won two rounds each going into the fifth, his pupil deserved the win:

"During the fight, as a fan, you look at the fight one way, as a coach you're a little bit I guess critical of your fighters... It was close but I thought Alex had lost that second round."

He added:

"Once the fight had finished, we watched the fight back about two or three times and I actually thought Alex then won [the second round]... It was 2-2 [going into the fifth]. Everyone kept saying to us Alex won that, Alex won that."

After the fight, Alex Volkanovski also expressed his dissent with the fight result in a tweet and called for a rematch against Makhachev.

Just watched the fight, I definitely think I won 2,3 and 5. Surprised I didn’t get my hand raised! Let’s do the rematch, anywhere, anytime! 👊

Despite losing a unanimous decision to the Russian, Volkanovski is still the No.1 pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC.

Alex Volkanovski believes he and Islam Makhachev surprised each other at UFC 284

Pound-for-pound king Alex Volkanovski gives credit where credit is due. In a recent upload on his YouTube channel, the featherweight champion explained that both he and Islam Makhachev surprised each other last weekend.

As 'The Great' saw it, the Dagestani surprised him on the feet, while he surprised the sambo maestro in the grappling department:

"I said going in that he has a good eye. I always knew he had a good eye. I knew he'd be good at [fighting at] distance, I knew he'd probably look for the counter... He didn't bite too much... Like I said, he had a good eye... I obviously caught a couple of shots. Obviously, I landed coming in as well."

He added:

"He surprised me a little bit on the feet and I guess I surprised him on the ground with some of the exchanges. Even when he first grabbed a hold of me, I was like alright... nothing too crazy here."
