Aljamain Sterling defends drinking alcohol during training camp after fan backlash: "It’s time people stop listening to the taboo myths"
Aljamain Sterling recently rationalized his choice to consume alcohol between training camps. Over the years, the MMA world has witnessed various fighters incorporating unconventional approaches into their training routines. However, the UFC bantamweight champion's latest revelation is something nearly unheard of in the sport.
During a recent conversation with MMA legend Demetrious Johnson, 'Funk Master' confessed to indulging in a sporadic drink during fight camp as a way to unwind from the intense pressure he faces in training:
"If I have a great sparring day, then I'm gonna treat myself in the middle of the camp. I’m gonna have one to three drinks, I’m gonna knock out early, and I wake up feeling like I’m ready to go again... I feel fresh."

Although 'Mighty Mouse' echoed Sterling's sentiments, fans on social media were quick to criticize him for indirectly promoting alcoholism. This backlash prompted 'Funk Master' to address the issue on X.
Sterling urged people to dismiss the misconceptions about drinking and asserted that when consumed in controlled amounts, it doesn't have any negative impact on training:
"I think it’s time people stop listening to the taboo myths about drinking and training camp. Everything in moderation, and knowing yourself and what is OK for you."

After losing his 135-pound title to Sean O'Malley at UFC 292 last year, Sterling moved up to the featherweight division and made a triumphant debut with a commanding win over Calvin Kattar at UFC 300 this past April. He was scheduled to face Movsar Evloev at UFC 307 on Oct. 5, but an elbow injury compelled him to withdraw from the bout.
Does Aljamain Sterling own an alcohol brand?
In August 2023, Aljamain Sterling ventured into the alcohol industry by launching his own Jamaican-style rum named Funk Harbor. Sterling shared that the bold spirit was his ambitious project, something he had been working on since 2022.
Sterling's Funk Harbor even earned glowing approval from UFC lightweight veteran Dan Hooker, who gave the beverage his stamp of endorsement after trying it in July.
