Aljamain Sterling scores last-gasp victory in Pit Submission Series debut

Aljamain Sterling recently made his debut in 'the pit' at the Pit Submission Series, a grappling competition hosted by Karate Combat. The former bantamweight champion is labeled as 'The Human Backpack' due to his lethal grappling skillset, and he walked away victorious in his debut match.

Sterling faced off against Bellator MMA lightweight contender Jay-Jay Wilson in the main event of Pit Submission Series 7. The match was a competitive affair, with 'Funk Master' securing a victory on points in the final seconds of overtime after a grueling battle.

The 34-year secured top mount with roughly ten seconds left in the match before his opponent turned to give up his back, handing Sterling the points he needed for victory.

With the former champion set to take on Movsar Evloev at UFC 307 in October, his time spent focusing on the grappling realm of MMA will serve him well against the talented Greco-Roman wrestling of Evloev.

Aljamain Sterling plans on taking Movsar Evloev's undefeated record at UFC 307

Aljamain Sterling's title loss to Sean O'Malley at UFC 292 saw him move to featherweight after years of brutal weight cuts to make the 135-pound bantamweight title limit.

'Funk Master' welcomed his newfound home with open arms and faced perennial contender Calvin Kattar in his divisional debut at UFC 300. Sterling secured a dominant decision victory over the Bostonian and currently occupies No.8 on the featherweight rankings.

With a second UFC title firmly on his mind, the 34-year-old will now take on one of the division's top prospects in Movsar Evloev. The Russian entered the promotion in 2019, and has since gone 8-0 inside the octagon and extended his MMA record to 18-0.

But the former bantamweight king is eager to take Evloev's "0", and the pair are scheduled to face off at UFC 307.

Following his recent win at Pit Submission Series 7, Sterling was interviewed by former UFC fighter Michelle Waterson, where he said this:

"Make sure you tune in October 5th, I'm whooping Movsar Evloev's a**! I am taking that 0. It's got to go!"
