Are Floyd Mayweather and Gervonta Davis friends? Explaining the relationship between the two

Gervonta Davis is undeniably one of the biggest names in boxing today. He is widely known for his power, movement, and versatility as a counterpuncher. Tank is the reigning WBA lightweight champion and has an impressive professional record of 29-0, with 27 of those wins coming via knockout.

Intriguingly, Davis is also known as Floyd Mayweather's protege. The West Baltimore native notably spent a long time under Mayweather's wings, which helped propel his rise to the top. While their friendship was initially fruitful, their relationship has soured over the past few years due to professional differences.

Are Floyd Mayweather and Gervonta Davis friends?

Gervonta Davis fought under Floyd Mayweather's Mayweather Promotions for a significant portion of his career. 'Tank' signed a deal with his mentor's organization in 2015 and saw his career take off with legendary boxing manager Al Haymon by his side as well.

While the two always shared a friendly and cordial relationship, cracks began to appear in early 2017 when Davis became a world champion. The boxing star began to accuse Mayweather of unprofessional behavior and of trying to keep the spotlight away from him during his come-up.

Davis finally broke off ties with Mayweather Promotions after defeating Rolly Romero in May 2022 and opted to go his own way under the counsel of his manager. While their split initially appeared fraternal, it became clear that things weren't as they seemed when Davis was booked against Ryan Garcia last April.

Davis accused Mayweather of banning him from his gym, where he held most of his training camps, and posted several tweets slamming the legendary boxer. However, they seemingly settled their beef before the Garcia fight, with Mayweather embracing his protege in the ring after watching him beat 'KingRy' via seventh-round knockout.

While they appeared to have buried the hatchet, it seems their feud wasn't settled. Earlier this year, Davis took offense to some tweets Mayweather posted and slammed 'Money' for being stuck in Dubai over unpaid debts. Davis then continued to fire shots at his mentor for his alleged detention in Dubai and challenged him to go live on social media.

It remains to be seen whether the two boxing personalities and on-and-off friends bury the hatchet once and for all.
