Belal Muhammad addresses Alexander Volkanovski and Michael 'Venom' Page's reactions to his UFC 304 win
Belal Muhammad knew that not many people were backing him to win the UFC welterweight title at UFC 304. That did not stop him from calling his shot and delivering in the main event with a domination of Leon Edwards in Manchester.
Before the fight, Muhammad warned fans booing him at the event press conference that he would turn their jeers into tears after he beat Edwards. After the win, 'Remember the Name' took his time taking a victory lap on social media. He noticed all fans in attendance who were disappointed by the result, including former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and British welterweight Michael 'Venom' Page.
While Page was classy in acknowledging Muhammad's victory with a subtle clap, Volkanovski was visibly upset with his face buried in his hands.
Muhammad took note of the viral reaction from the former champion on Instagram, commenting:
"Told you the boos would change to tears"
Volkanovski has no connection to England as an Australian fighter but picked Edwards to win the fight on his YouTube channel.
Belal Muhammad's win over Leon Edwards
Aside from silencing doubters at UFC 304, Belal Muhammad broke the record of becoming the oldest fighter to win an undisputed belt in the octagon at the welterweight division or below.
Before Muhammad's victory over Leon Edwards, many liked to point out that fighters over the age of 35 performed poorly in previous title fights. The only fighter to win a title bout above the age of 35 from flyweight to welterweight in the UFC before July 27 was Tyron Woodley, who defended his 170-pound belt twice after reaching the noteworthy age.
On Saturday, Muhammad became the first challenger over 35 to win the belt. 'Remember the Name' turned 36 roughly two weeks before UFC 304 but showed no signs of age in the fight.
