BREAKING: Alex Pereira is "going to 205 pounds" with Glover Teixeira no more the light heavyweight champion, claims Chael Sonnen

Chael Sonnen recently claimed that UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira will move up to 205lbs now that Glover Teixeira, 'Poatan's' training partner and mentor, is no longer the light heavyweight champion.

To give some background on the recent developments, Khamzat Chimaev and Alex Pereira have been trading barbs on social media with a potential fight between the two seemingly on the horizon.

During a recent interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, 'Poatan' revealed that his team had approached Chimaev with a proposal for a fight in the light heavyweight division on the UFC 283 card in Brazil. 'Borz' apparently turned down the offer.

With all that in mind, Sonnen expounded on the sequence of events and claimed that Pereira may very well be moving to 205lbs. Furthermore, Sonnen confirmed it with a reliable source and ruminated over the idea on his YouTube channel:

"He [Sonnen's source] said that Alex Pereira will fight Chimaev, but Pereira is going to 205 pounds. I said, 'Was that discussed at a decision-making level with the UFC?' He said, 'No. That was in his own camp and team and social media and he did let his own team know that he would do that.'"

Sonnen added that moving up in weight class was the intention all this while, but Pereira did not act on it since Glover Teixeira was the champion of the division:

"Going to 205 pound was his plan all along. He said that Pereira would stay out of 205 pounds for as long as Glover had the reign. Now in the event of the idea that Glover is no longer the champion, Pereira is going to 205 pound."

The information makes sense for Chael Sonnen considering the size of Pereira.

Daniel Cormier credits Glover Teixeira for Alex Pereira's come-from-behind victory at UFC 281

Alex Pereira pulled off a sensational TKO victory against rival Israel Adesanya at UFC 281, extending his record against 'The Last Stylebender' in combat sports to 3-0.

However, Pereira was behind on the scorecards going into the fifth round, and his team, led by former light heavyweight champion Glover Teixeira, pushed 'Poatan' to chase the finish.

Speaking about Teixeira's contribution to the victory on his YouTube channel, Daniel Cormier stated:

“I think the key was Glover Teixeira and his team letting Alex Pereira know, very sternly, ‘If you want to be the champion, you’ve got five minutes. You’ve got to lay it all out there.’ And that’s exactly what he did. He went out there and threw caution to the wind. Pereira knew that if he didn’t risk it, he was going to lose the fight, and he got the job done in round five.”
