Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga: Full Results

Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga just wrapped up. The boxing event took place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sept. 14. It was a tribute to the Mexican Independence Day and featured 10 fights in seven weight classes. This article recaps the fights and explores the full results.

In the main event, Alvarez attempted to defend his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles against Puerto Rico's Berlanga. The Mexican boxer was coming off a hard-fought unanimous decision win over Jaime Munguia. Meanwhile, Berlanga defeated Padraig McCrory in his last outing in February.

In the fight, Alvarez imposed his will from the opening bell, landing heavy shots from the get-go. Berlanga tried to disrupt his momentum with snappy jabs but a left hand from Alvarez dropped him in Round 3. Berlanga answered the 10-count but the Mexican chased him around the ring to put an end to the contest.

Berlanga maintained composure under pressure and continued to fire back but hit the canvas again in the closing seconds of Round 7. Alvarez continued the systematic beatdown and had the Puerto Rican in trouble several times in the later rounds.

To his credit, Berlanga landed a few good shots but could not accumulate the strikes to change the complexion of the fight. Alvarez's advance continued till the final bell as he secured a unanimous decision victory to remain the WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion.

WBA (Regular) middleweight champion Erislandy Lara attempted the third defense of his title against Danny Garcia. Heading into the fight, Lara was the more active fighter in recent years as he defended the title against Michael Zerafa in March 2024.

Meanwhile, this was Garcia's first professional boxing appearance since defeating Jose Benavidez Jr. in July 2022. He hoped to become a three-division champion with a potential win over Lara.

Lara, the oldest reigning boxing world champion, proved to be the better boxer between and kept Garcia at bay in a largely uneventful bout. A short left from Lara in Round 9 dropped Garcia on one knee and his corner stopped the fight to save him from absorbing unnecessary punishment.

This was Lara's fourth-straight T/KO victory and he remained the WBA (Regular) middleweight champion.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga undercard results: Caleb Plant wins interim title

Former IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant fought Trevor McCumby in the vacant interim WBA super middleweight title fight on the main card. Plant has been relatively inactive in recent years and has lost two of his three most recent bouts. His last fight ended in a unanimous decision loss against David Benavidez and another defeat would likely end his title aspirations.

His opponent, McCumby was undefeated with a 28-0 record heading into the fight and hoped to score the biggest win of his professional boxing career on Sept. 14.

McCumby started sharp and assumed an aggressive posture from the beginning of the fight. He enjoyed a lot of success in the early rounds and knocked his opponent down twice, in Rounds 2 and 4.

Plant appeared to be approaching the first knockout loss of his professional boxing career but switched things up in the middle rounds. The former champion's aggression forced McCumby into a defensive shell.

While McCumby continued to offer resistance and tagged Plant with a few counterstrikes, he could not swing the momentum back in his favor. The sustained beatdown continued to get worse as the rounds progressed.

The referee called a stop to the contest with one second left in Round 9 as Plant trapped McCumby against the ropes and clobbered him with powerful shots that went unanswered. With the win, Plant became the interim WBA super middleweight champion.

Former WBA super lightweight champion Rolando Romero fought Manuel Jaimes, hoping to get back in the win column. He lost the title to Isaac Cruz on March 30.

Romero proved to be a notch above Jaimes in terms of skills and boxing experience. He dictated the pace with superior technique and elusive footwork, cruising to a comfortable unanimous decision victory.

Jaimes retaliated with his own attacks to make the job difficult for Romero but the Las Vegas native never allowed him to get comfortable in the ring. According to the broadcast team, this was Romero's 10th professional boxing victory in Las Vegas.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga preliminary card results: Stephen Fulton earns controversial win, four fights end in finishes

In the preliminary card headlining bout, Stephen Fulton returned to competition more than one year after his devastating loss to Japanese phenom Naoya Inoue. He fought Mexican-American boxer Carlos Castro, who last defeated Alan Castillo in May 2023.

Fulton struggled with Castro's snapping left jab and suffered the only knockdown of the fight in Round 5 after getting tagged with a perfectly placed right hand. However, he displayed an overall versatile striking which seemed to have earned him the judges' nod.

After 10 rounds of back-and-forth action, Fulton pulled off a split-decision win to get back in the win column. However, audience reactions suggested strong disagreement with the scorecards.

Jonathan Lopez defeated Richard Medina by unanimous decision in the only other preliminary card bout that went the distance.

Elsewhere, Ricardo Salas Rodriguez finished Roiman Villa with the third-round KO to extend his unbeaten streak to six.

Meanwhile, Yoenli Hernandez, Lawrence King, and Bek Nurmaganbet defeated Jose Sanchez, Vaughn Williams, and Joshua Conley, respectively, by second-round finishes.
