Chael Sonnen addresses Stipe Miocic as "fireman" and Jon Jones as "guy w 9 toes" when asked if he will be in attendance at UFC 309
Stipe Miocic and Jon Jones will go to war over the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 309. The event will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City, United States, on Nov.16.
Ahead of the fight, one fan asked veteran UFC fighter Chael Sonnen whether he would be attending, and Sonnen gave a humorous reply. The 47-year-old replied to the X user and vowed to be there, while also referring to Miocic as "fireman" and Jones as "the guy with 9 toes." He wrote:
“I’ll be at Stipe (fireman) taking on Jones (guy w 9 toes)”
Sonnen addressed Miocic as a "fireman" because of Miocic's commitment to his job as a firefighter. He humorously termed ‘Bones’ "the guy with 9 toes" because, during their fight at UFC 159 in 2013, Jones broke his toe but continued fighting, and remained unaware of the injury until the post-fight interview in the Octagon. Jones clinched the victory via KO/TKO in the first round.
Miocic vs. Jones was originally slated for UFC 295, but the 37-year-old Jones had to pull out of the bout after suffering a torn pectoral tendon during training camp. UFC 309 will mark Miocic's return to the Octagon after being out of action for more than three years. His last fight was against Francis Ngannou, where he suffered a second-round loss via KO/TKO at UFC 260.
Stipe Miocic apologizes for his earlier comment on Jon Jones ahead of UFC 309
In the UFC Countdown video, Stipe Miocic vowed to hurt Jon Jones and, in a rush of adrenaline, called out Jones, saying "bring it on, b**ch." This remark drew a negative reaction from ‘Bones’ who took to social media to express that the disrespect was unnecessary.
In an interview with Ariel Helwani, Miocic was asked about his comments, and he admitted that it was not his intent to hurt Jones's feelings and said it happened in the heat of the moment. He explained:
"Oh yeah. He was just talking to me and I was talking to him. Bring it on. I don't know. I didn't try to hurt his feelings. I mean, I was just fired up... I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to disrespect him in any way. It was just the moment, the heat of the moment. I mean, sorry. I don't know."
