Chael Sonnen addressing Colby Covington post-UFC Tampa has former UFC star in splits: "Looked him right in his eyes and lied to him"

A former UFC middleweight mocked Chael Sonnen for addressing Colby Covington following the latter's loss to Joaquin Buckley, and accused Sonnen of lying straight to Covington's face. Covington took on Buckley in the main event of UFC Tampa on Dec. 14.

In the first round, ‘Chaos’ suffered a cut on his right eye, and the cut got progressively worse as the fight wore on. In the last minute of the third round, the doctor inspected Covington's eye, and forced the referee to call a halt to the bout.

Former UFC fighter Derek Brunson shared a video clip on his X account of Sonnen addressing Covington backstage. In the clip, Sonnen offered words of support to the former welterweight title challenger, telling him it was a good performance and that he should be proud of himself. Brunson took a jab at Sonnen, saying:

“Chael Sonnen looked him right in his eyes and lied to him.”

Michael Bisping shares his thoughts on Colby Covington's loss to Joaquin Buckley

Colby Covington took the fight on short notice, as Joaquin Buckley was originally scheduled to face Ian Machado Garry. However, the promotion moved Garry to UFC 310, where he took on Shavkat Rakhmonov in the co-main event.

Michael Bisping, in his latest YouTube video, praised Colby Covington for stepping in on short notice. However, Bisping also stated that Covington did not perform well in the fight and that ‘New Mansa’ was simply too powerful for him. Bisping said:

“Colby Covington, fair play, I respect him. He stepped up on short notice, But tonight was not his night. He was not good enough, he wasn’t quick enough, he wasn’t powerful enough with the wrestling. Joaquin Buckley just kind of picked him apart, busted him up early, opened up a cut right on the eyelid. It was a really good performance.”

He continued:

“Covington as the fight was going on, he was having more success with the wrestling. But his face was a mess. He was getting pieced up by Joaquin Buckley.”
