Chael Sonnen drops bombshell about Islam Makhachev’s alleged IV use, says Dan Hooker’s informant is "a scumbag"

Chael Sonnen has weighed in on the IV controversy surrounding Islam Makhachev.

In the aftermath of UFC 284, Alexander Volkanovski and his team, especially Dan Hooker, discredited Makhachev’s win due to an alleged IV usage during his weight-cutting recovery. The accusations have raised questions about USADA's rules and whether the UFC lightweight champion did anything wrong.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Sonnen expressed his disappointment at the nurse who supposedly snitched on Makhachev to Volkanovski’s team:

“I will just share with you, whoever the big mouth nurse is that thinks this is gonna be her 15 minutes of fame, she’s a scumbag, she should’ve never opened her mouth. If she comes into somebody’s room, and she takes a fee, and she’s doing something that’s a medical procedure that she deems is appropriate and necessary and then later finds out it’s [cheating] and then speaks up to Dan Hooker and the gang, she’s no good.”

USADA made a statement regarding a possible investigation, but it seems unlikely Makhachev will face any repercussions. There is also confusion surrounding USADA’s IV policy, which allows 100 ml of infusions when needed.

Dumb cunt thinks he can fly to Australia hire a nurse to give him an I.V and we won’t find out. Cheating dog.

Chael Sonnen believes USADA paved the way for fighters to utilize IV

Fighters use IV infusions for two primary reasons. Some need help rehydrating after a brutal weight cut, while others overload their systems to cover up performance-enhancing drug (PED) usage. During the same appearance on The MMA Hour, Chael Sonnen stated that USADA made fighters aware of IVs being able to flush out PEDs when they banned their usage:

“USADA made a colossal mistake by telling people that they can’t use the IV. Nobody understood fully that you could flush PEDs if you use an IV until USADA came out and said, ‘No more IVs.' That was the light that flipped on in everybody going, ‘Okay, this is how you beat ’em.' It was a big miss by USADA.”

IV usage likely won’t become fully legal anytime soon. The potential for PED usage to be covered up is concerning, and some fighters may utilize the process to cut too much weight. As for Islam Makhachev, he remains innocent until proven guilty.
