Coach discusses what really entices Jon Jones about the heavyweight division
After three years away from mixed martial arts, Jon Jones' heavyweight career got off to an impressive start. 'Bones' needed just over two minutes to pick up a first-round submission victory over Ciryl Gane to become the eighth fighter in UFC history to become a champion in two weight classes.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, the heavyweight champion's striking coach, Brandon Gibson, discussed his move:
"You find a different gear when that sense of fear kicks in. When that guy standing across the cage from you makes the hair on your arms stand up. At heavyweight, I think we'll find a lot of opponents that bring that. Light heavyweight is so dynamic. These guys have so much skill and technique, but it's not like heavyweight where these guys can barely touch you and it's lights out."
Gibson continued to praise Jones' move to the heavyweight division by saying:
"I think at heavyweight, there's so much less room for error, and that entices Jon, that intrigues Jon, and that motivates him even more. I'm really happy he made this jump. We had such a focused and disciplined training camp and brought out some of the best guys I've ever met to be a part of it. I think we're going to see a very strong run here at heavyweight for Jon Jones."

Leading up to UFC 285, there were plenty of questions about how Jon Jones would look in the octagon with the additional weight. 'Bones' was able to answer those questions by becoming the 18th undisputed champion in UFC heavyweight history.
Jon Jones' heavyweight career may not last long, says coach
Prior to making his heavyweight debut, Jon Jones signed an eight-fight contract with the UFC.
Despite the new contract, Jones' striking coach, Brandon Gibson, doesn't see his heavyweight career lasting too long. On the same episode of The MMA Hour, Gibson said:
"I think Jon’s going to be one of those athletes that walks away early... I think Jon will ride off into the sunset, and us, as MMA fans, will still be clamoring for one more or talking about potential matchups, but I don’t think Jon’s going to have too much more to prove."

Gibson did not reveal whether he believes Jones' next bout could be his last. He did, however, note that the heavyweight champion still has plenty of fire and motivation.
