Conor McGregor could get a shot at 170 lbs gold if he beats this UFC fighter
Conor McGregor is looking to make his return to the octagon in 2023. The former two-division champion has not fought since breaking his leg in the very first round against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 back in 2021. However, 'The Notorious' has put on quite a bit of weight and is rumored to be making his debut at 170 lbs, which is the welterweight division.
In a recent interview with Patrick McCorry onThe Patrick McCorry Sports Show, MMA journalist Brett Okamoto revealed who his probable opponents are for McGregor and spoke about who he will have to beat to get a title shot:
"If Conor fights in July, yes I do think the most likely fight would be Michael Chandler. I think that that's a fight, I know that's a fight the UFC would like. Obviously, it's a fight Chandler would like, it's a fight the fans would like. I think you could position it in a way that you could have it at 170 [lbs]."
He added:
"And as wild and crazy as it is and kind of unfair as it is. If Conor were to beat Michael Chandler at 170, they could give him a title shot at 170."
Okamoto believes Conor McGregor is currently favored to fight Michael Chandler in a potential fight in July during International Fight Week. If he manages to beat Chandler, 'The Notorious' may even secure a title fight.
