Conor McGregor speaks out against Ireland's immigration system, calling it a "betrayal"

Irish MMA superstar Conor McGregor has been posting a lot of political tweets on X. In his most recent rant, 'The Notorious' criticized the current Irish government on its handling of the immigration system of the country. McGregor insinuated that the immigration system is no longer upholding a standard on who they'll let in the country, saying:

"For too long Ireland has put up with policies that do not ensure that those entering our country are of the character, skills and desire to benefit Ireland. WE WILL NEVER ACCEPT THIS BETRAYAL OF OUR COUNTRY."

McGregor is one of many Irish people who echo anti-immigration sentiments in Ireland, claiming that immigrants and asylum seekers contribute to the country's crime rate. Although he doesn't directly advocate the cessation of immigration in his country, McGregor insists that the government uphold stricter policies in letting foreigners in.

In a report by The Irish Times last year, the National Police of Ireland, the Garda Siochana, claimed that there's no need for increased policing towards immigrants and asylum seekers, as opposed to what a lot of Irish people say.

In the statement, The Garda Headquarters said (via The Irish Times):

“Notwithstanding isolated local incidents An Garda Síochána has not recorded any significant increase in criminal activity or public order issues directly caused by international protection applicants at this time. An Garda Síochána has not seen a requirement to increase Garda resources in any area directly due to the current accommodation of international protection applicants."
