Dana White called Chael Sonnen to drop hilarious one-liner reaction to $8.8 million payout claim, says the UFC veteran
Chael Sonnen made headlines in 2023 when he claimed a staggering $8.8 million payday for his rematch against Anderson Silva at UFC 148 in 2012.
Sonnen, a former UFC middleweight title challenger, has always been outspoken, often hyping fights and engaging in heated rivalries. While a skilled wrestler with a strong record, his outlandish claims often walked the line between entertainment and truth.
The $8.8 million figure raised eyebrows – it seemed far outside the realm of what fighters were typically making at the time. Sonnen, however, doubled down, even speculating that Silva might have earned an even larger sum.
However, doubt lingered. Sonnen eventually admitted to a friend that the number wasn't accurate, acknowledging the implausibility based on the event's revenue.
In a recent turn of events, Sonnen revealed on the Flagrant podcast that UFC CEO Dana White himself reached out after the initial claim. According to Sonnen, White offered a humorous response to the inflated payout:
"It is amazing how you do not let the truth get in the way of a story."

Chael Sonnen clarifies remarks on Conor McGregor's alleged rehab stint
Chael Sonnen has walked back his earlier comments suggesting Conor McGregor might be in rehab for substance abuse.
In a recent episode of his Beyond The Fight podcast, Sonnen addressed the situation, emphasizing he has no confirmation of McGregor being in rehab. He also stated he wouldn't criticize McGregor for seeking help but rather commend him.
Sonnen shifted his focus to the possibility of McGregor simply being cautious after a period of heavy partying.
'The American Gangster' said:
"I do not know that Conor [McGregor] is in rehab, for one. For two, I wouldn’t begrudge or tease Conor in the least if he was in rehab, I would be very proud of Conor, and I would imagine for somebody in his spot, to go into rehab is something you want to keep quiet... I think it was alcohol [in his drink], he didn’t want a mistake to be made, he partied it up and made some bad decisions.” [H/T BJPenn.com]
