Dana White fears that $200 million man Conor McGregor might face similar fate as Ronda Rousey: "Ended up being her downfall"
Dana White believes Conor McGregor could suffer the same fate as Ronda Rousey, suggesting that his monetary success could be the downfall of his MMA career.
'The Notorious' is widely considered to be the biggest star in MMA history and is often credited as a major factor as to why the UFC is as big as it is today. McGregor's success inside the octagon has also seen him rake in the cash outside of it, having earned $100s of millions for boxing Floyd Mayweather, starring in a movie and selling his shares of the Proper No.12 Whiskey brand. As per Celebrity Net Worth, McGregor boast a net worth of $200 million.
Like McGregor, Rousey also saw herself shoot to star status during her MMA career. Her undefeated run beginning in 2011 for Strikeforce to 2015 in the UFC meant she was catapulted to the forefront of women's MMA.
Her success also came with significant financial gain, which many people, including Dana White, believe led to 'Rowdy' calling time on her career after suffering back-to-back defeats.
White then compared McGregor and Rousey's careers during a recent appearance on Shaquille O'Neal's The Big Podcast. According to the UFC CEO, whilst he's hoping to see the Irishman back in the octagon soon, it wouldn't be a surprise if McGregor called it a day, like Rousey did. He explained:
"The Conor thing is, much like Ronda. If you look like Ronda, so many opportunities fell on Ronda because of who she was...It ended up being her downfall, the money and everything else...She doesn't have to work, she doesn't have to do anything...Conor McGregor is 10x that. When that kind of money becomes involved in the fight business, it's tough man."
