Daniel Cormier reveals why he didn't commentate on UFC 284
Daniel Cormier is a regular presence in the UFC commentary booth during most of pay-per-views. However, the former two-division champion was absent at this past weekend's UFC 284 event, which was headlined by Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski in Perth.
In a recent Twitter back-and-forth with a fan, the UFC Hall of Famer revealed why he chose not to call the fight card.
The thread started with Twitter user @GQBader questioning the former fighter's credibility after Cormier pegged UFC 284 as the "greatest champ vs. champ" showdown in the promotion's history.
The user suggested that the American should not commentate during his former foe Jon Jones' comeback fight:
"Losing credibility right there. Please don't commentate during @JonnyBones fight."
In a subsequent tweet, Cormier revealed why he chose to stay away from calling the fights at UFC 284. 'DC' suggested that he decided to skip the event, respecting fan sentiment:
"Ok, any other fights you want me off? I took last night off at your suggestion. Was the experience much more enjoyable?"
Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormeir have been criticized by fans for what some perceive to be biased commentary on numerous occasions in the past.
The fact that 'DC' maintains a close relationship with many Dagestani fighters, including Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, might have played a part in fans wanting the former champion to sit out the event.
Daniel Cormier's exclusion from the UFC 284 broadcast team was lauded by many fight fans on social media:
Daniel Cormier praises Alexander Volkanovski for his impressive showing against Islam Makhachev at UFC 284
Daniel Cormeir is a close friend of UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, but that didn't stop him from speaking his mind about last weekend's lightweight title fight.
As per the UFC Hall of Famer, Alexander Volkanovski deserves all the praise in the world for defying expectations and performing exceptionally well against the Russian.
Daniel Cormier also rubbished judge Derek Cleary's scorecard, which awarded the Australian merely one round for the entire bout:
"That was a bad scorecard. 3-2 Volk lost nothing tonight. He fought better than anyone thought he could. He is as good as anyone at any weight in the world. Great fight overall."
