Daniel Cormier shares hilarious reaction to Dustin Poirier “flipping” his Knockout of the Year pick: “I would’ve made a great attorney”
Former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier joined former two-division UFC champ Daniel Cormier and MMA legend Chael Sonnen in the Good Guy / Bad Guy show on ESPN MMA on YouTube. The main topic of conversation was their picks for 2024's Knockout of the Year.
Right away, Poirier named his pick: Ilia Topuria's KO of the unstoppable Max Holloway at UFC 308 last October. The KO was historic as no one's been able to even hurt Max Holloway - let alone finish him - in his near-15-year career.
Poirier said (2:04):
"For me personally I think it's got to be [Ilia] Topuria knocking out Max [Holloway]. Max is a legend. Multiple time world champion. One of the best guys to ever do it and Topuria was the first man to to put him on his a** and knock him out, you know. That was super impressive for me".
After this, Sonnen and Cormier made their picks. Cormier, however, contested Poirier's pick. He asked why he didn't pick his KO of Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299. 'The Diamond' defended his pick as he doesn't see his KO of 'BSD' as anywhere close to the magnitude of Topuria's Holloway KO.
Further into the video, however, after 'DC' said his pick, Poirier did a double take, saying (7:47):
"Going back to The Knockout of the Year, can I switch my my pick [to Saint Denis KO]? Because, man, just now, you talking about it, may it brought me back to [that night]...and it brought me back to that moment".
To this, Cormier hilariously said:
"Chael [Sonnen], and that right there, Chael, is why I would have made a great attourney. Because I flipped him, Chael! [Laughs]".

Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen's pick for Knockout of the Year
Since they were all sharing their picks, both Daniel Cormier and Chael Sonnen shared which KO they felt was the best of the year. While they're of different opinions, they both had good points.
Sonnen said (2:36):
"For me I actually went to International fight weekend. I went to Alex Pereira over Jiri Prochazka for a couple of reasons. First off, dealing with Jiri is something nobody wants to have to do. Alex had to deal with Jiri a second time. So now, knocking him out becomes that much more difficult because Jiri is now used to Alex"
As for Cormier, unlike Sonnen and Poirier, his pick was the choice of perhaps nearly every MMA fan this year. It may very well win knockout of the decade (6:00):
"For me it's Max Holloway knocking out Justin Gaethje because, just from my perspective - I sit next to that octagon - and I watch big moments. And [UFC president] Dana [White] goes, 'I sell holy sh*t moments' That was a 'holy sh*t' moment."
