Demetrious Johnson on getting children into martial arts: “I think jiu-jitsu is a great way”
Mixed martial arts legend and reigning ONE flyweight MMA world champion 'Mighty Mouse' Demetrious Johnson of the United States is widely considered among fans one of the best to ever do it.
In fact, many think of Johnson as the greatest MMA fighter of all time. And it would be hard to argue against that, what with his body of work. So when a guy like Johnson shares his knowledge, people should listen.
Johnson recently guested former ONE women's atomweight MMA world champion 'Unstoppable' Angela Lee on his Mighty Cast podcast on YouTube, and the two dove into a multitude of topics ranging from fighting as a career, to mental health, to martial arts in general.
In one of the segments, Johnson talked about getting his kids into martial arts, not necessarily to become fighters, but to learn how to defend themselves.
'Mighty Mouse' has some advice for parents who want to get their kids into martial arts, and that's to start with jiu-jitsu.
The legendary flyweight said:
"Ah, ****. You know James. He's good. He's back at the gym. He's still wearing his Spiderman shirt. He's still enjoying the process of doing jiu-jitsu. And you know, people ask me, are you gonna have to do boxing and kickboxing? This I was like, no, because I don't wanna get, you know, hit to the head. Yeah. Have a concussion. But I think jiu-jitsu is a great way to introduce kids into [martial arts]."
What's next for 'Mighty Mouse' Demetrious Johnson?
Fans eagerly await the return of the legendary 'Mighty Mouse' Demetrious Johnson.
The American was last seen in a successful world title defense against former champion Adriano Moraes at ONE Fight Night 10 in 2023. 'Mighty Mouse' took home a five-round unanimous decision shutout in that fight, and hasn't competed since.
Recently, ONE interim strawweight MMA world champion 'The Monkey God' Jarred Brooks called out Johnson to a superfight. Other top five fighters such as Reece McLaren have also thrown their name into the Demetrious Johnson sweepstakes.
