Demetrious Johnson: Styles make fights in Superbon vs. Chingiz Allazov showdown

As the hours tick down to Superbon vs. Allazov, one world champion believes that the fight comes down to who can enforce their particular style in the ONE circle.

ONE flyweight MMA world champion Demetrious Johnson was split between picking a winner in the main event of ONE Fight Night 6 on Prime Video this weekend but admitted that the fight isn’t as simple as tallying up strengths and weaknesses between the two.

In an interview with ONE Championship, 'Mighty Mouse' gave his take on the fight and what to look for as the two kickboxers touch gloves on Friday:

“I think it’s going to be a great fight. Chingiz is pretty legit. Superbon obviously is one of the best to ever do it. He knocked out Giorgio Petrosyan. So it will come down to whoever is gonna do their style.”

While some have asserted that Chingiz Allazov carries the power advantage, Demetrious Johnson pointed out that Superbon Singha Mawynn has the ability to totally knock out top contenders if his style works against them. He brutally knocked out Giorgio Petrosyan at ONE Championship: First Strike with a head kick that sat atop many fans’ “knockout of the year” lists for 2021.

Superbon believes he’s still several fights away from being the number one pound-for-pound kickboxer

While sitting on top of the world as a world champion in ONE’s featherweight kickboxing division (and undefeated in ONE at that), Superbon believes there’s still plenty of work to be done to solidify himself as the best striker in the world.

At the ONE Fight Night 6 press conference held in Bangkok this week, he gave his thoughts on his pound-for-pound standing among the other great strikers:

“I’m very honored and happy that people think of me like that. However, for me, I still think that there’s a lot of other strikers who are above me or who I have to fight before I can fully say that I accept this title.”

Although humble in his response, it’s hard to think of many kickboxers who would be ranked above him left to beat.

If he beats Chingiz Allazov this weekend, he’ll have beaten four of the top five featherweight kickboxers in ONE Championship, according to the promotion’s official rankings. He’s still yet to fight fifth-ranked Tayfun Ozcan of Turkey, although the two were scheduled to meet last September.

In that fight, Superbon was not medically cleared to fight.

If he succeeds on Friday, he’ll have that fight on the table, as well as super fights with other kickboxing (or even Muay Thai) world champions in ONE Championship.

ONE Fight Night 6 takes place on January 13 (in the evening in the US) from the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. The event streams on Amazon Prime for North American subscribers.
